Last 2 nights something has dug up recently planted tomatoes and squash. Whatever it is they are not eating the plants. Digging a 3-4” hole. Plants were started in potting soil . Coon or woodchucks?

Sounds almost like squirrels, but could be skunks or another critter that's looking for grubs.
Feral cats love to destroy gardens, using them as toilets .

Likely coon or skunk digging. Chucks or rabbits would of trimmed your plants.

Woodchucks are not nocturnal, neither are squirrels. I too feel you have some animals looking for worms, bugs, beetles etc. Pulling small plants and not eating them, I have birds do that to my onion plants, but that is during the day and you say this is done at night. Could be very earlly AM or at dusk and then it could be a whole host of creatures.

I tend to agree that the OPs problem is not ground hogs but I disagree that they are not nocturnal. I have trail camera pictures of ground hogs out feeding at night.

I bet you know a trapper , maybe he could put some traps out and catch it and give you a solid idea what it is.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

If you are using bone meal or blood meal, skunks or coon will dig to get at it.
