In Ohio snare locks that are not assisted by springs are, by definition, relaxing locks. That's news to me. Where's that in the regs? I've just never seen it.

If you look at Ohio's definition of what a relaxing lock is, it is a lock that stops moving when the animal stops pulling. There's not a lock out there that can move after the animal stops pulling.

Does ohio have real snaring or the fake cable restraint nonsense? Somewhere in-between. They have real snares but the regulations on them are very far what a great snare is. Locks they require suck, and no kill springs, that I recall. We can use kill springs for groundhog snaring if you're a licensed nuisance trapper.

Everybody needs to calm down about relaxing or not and who did what. The regulations work. Snares are legal and that’s all that matters. Anti’s love this kind of discussion.:(

Anti’s love this kind of discussion.:( Unfortunately there is a lot of misunderstanding on the relaxing lock thing. What the industry calls a relaxing lock and what the rules say a relaxing lock is are two separate things. I think some states define this differently. That's why I always ask how does your state define a relaxing lock when they ask if a certain lock is relaxing or not. Only thing we cant do with snares in Ohio other than the springs is use a drag on a snare, cant use them on pubic ground unless you're beaver trapping, and cant set them on a livestock trail or two track road.

Ohio legalized snares in 1996. As for locks, we are able to use any of the locks on the market, EXCEPT those that are assisted in closing with any type of spring.
Doug Haubert (1994-2000) myself (2000-2002) and Bob Fissell (2002-2006) were Presidents of the OSTA prior to, and just after snares were legalized. We all received calls from states trying to use snares. More than one was successful. Some used our language almost verbatim. One crossed out Ohio, and inserted the name of their state.
Hal left out the person who was instrumental in convincing the Fur Council to agree to snares in Ohio. Doug Haubert took Jeff Robinson of JR and Sons to Columbus to give a presentation to the Fur Council. After over an hour and honestly answering questions. There was a little bit of a compromise with snares only used on private land, not on public land.
