Bought these yesterday but am a little confused how traps this size have this type of unwelded chain. Unfortunately I didn't realize the dog on the larger trap was hanging by a thread and broke it loading it in my truck.

Are these elaborate repros? If not any idea of age? Thanks

Most of these were imported from Africa about 30 years ago by somebody in minnesota.

Not reproductions. I have examples aging from fur trade era through turn of century.

"Bow spring" design (versus leaf spring) originated in Europe and used by several makers throughout. I have found them in nearly every state I've worked in, but most probably came down from northern US/Canada.

Well built, but cumbersome to carry and make a set with.

That broken dog would not be difficult to repair.

That's where I'm located so it would make sense, thank you.

The top of the springs are stamped near the jaws but I can't make it out. Would having someone tig weld the dog be the best option?

I don't think you would want to weld that old metal. Best to have someone who dabbles in blacksmithing make a new part using old one as a pattern. If it's done right, you won't know the difference on that small of a piece.
