I have some coons getting on my boat dock and in my boats.. I only go to my fish camp once a week.. if I were to set a couple of dp’s, how much weight should I add to the chain to drown them? Also.. if I set them on the edge of the dock.. will the coon jump in the water.. or just sit there on the dock? The waterway is traveled pretty heavily.. and I don’t really want a coon on my dock in a trap for everyone to see..

I'd not be asking those type of questions on an open internet forum but I will give you my best answer...

If you are going only on the weekends then go Friday night and set the traps, check Saturday and Sunday and pull the sets. Or contact the state trappers association and find a local trapper and see if they will take care of the traps while you are gone and maybe take him out fishing as payment. Coon are pretty easy to catch so you don't need a superstar trapper even a kid getting into trapping would work for you purposes.

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

If you attach a weight to the chain and have a link of the chain over a short stud on the dock, like a finish nail head, with the weight hanging in the water, the coon should dislodge the link from the "stud", and be whisked into the water automatically, add extra wire attached to the chain to retrieve the whole thing, just need enough depth and weight, maybe 10 pounds....

I’d get a zip tie and staple it around the trap on the edge of the dock. Trap will break loose easily. Attach a weight to the chain as gcs wrote in the above post. I’ve done this, it will work

You can set the bank and catch them on the way to and from and run them down a wire like a standard drowning set and there is no chance of them hanging out on a dock if things don't go exactly as planed to be seen.

Personally I would gang set the entire area everywhere I could out to about 1/4 mile( just as an example of further then direct problem area) for the days I was there and remove as many out of the population as I could.

Just use cage trap and set it with a cover over it. NO ONE complains about a live trap. When i say cover over it leave both ends open. Next this is where few people think about it . IF you have a cell cam set it showing the trap. Soon as you see the critter is caught go take care of him. Less likely to be seen by a passing Karen .

I heard one time those peanut flavored little packets are coon repelent.
go to rural king pick some up. You have to keep "MICE" out of your boat.

LOL, have a cousin with a boat and boathouse, when coons were spreading all over years ago, he was given some of those weather proof rat blocks figuring that would take care of them....

Well, all it did was give the coons the runs, green poop everywhere, He called for me to get rid of them the old fashioned way... grin

This ^^
In TN. nonlethal traps must be checked every 36 hours. Quit asking for trouble.

Set where a big tree branch is overhead. Pull an anvil up and tie off to trap so when trap is sprung the anvil falls striking the critter. I’ve never used this setup but I’ve seen it on tv quite a bit. Best of luck

Yes! Also, try pulling up one of the dock boards and making it tippy. Like a trap door. Underneath put a bunch of spikes/spears sticking up. If dry ground maybe a bear trap…with teeth. Use tootsie rolls for bait, small ones. Coons work the lil ones better. Keep us posted
