Found these in the woods today. On ash and maple logs that had fallen and were decaying. I think they are oyster, but not 100% sure.

They are oyster mushrooms. Some are too old to eat IMO, but a few of them would be good to go.

As far as I am concerned, if they aren't Morel's, they are TOADSTOOLS. smile

I have nothing clever to put here.

my book also says that the false chanterelle is found on rotting trees.

They look like overripe golden oysters, and the ones in the last picture could be lung oysters or something related. All edible, but past their prime.

The false chanterelle is not even remotely similar (unless all mushrooms look the same to you)
Oysters are asymmetrical and have stems that are off to the side, and grow in clusters. The false chanterelle (Hygrophoropsis) doesn't grow in clusters and it's pretty symmetrical. It also has very peculiar gills. They fork very neatly and regularly (split in two, then again in two, etc..), and oysters have the most common gill configuration, with long gills that go all the way from the stem to the edge and shorter gills of various lengths filling the gaps uniformly.

This is what I mean:

I agree. I wish you could find them in stores.

Got a photo from a speeding camera in the mail. I immediately sent it back - way too expensive and really poor quality.
