Was thinking about a couple of conversations I read on Trapperman.
Sealing boards to minimize bacteria and for easier removal.
I have bout 4 extra gallons of floor stain w/ polyurethane. And was thing about making a dip tank with some unused sewer pipe. Just a quick dip then air dry. All my boards I have set up with eye screws that hang on hooks to dry nose down.
Any downside to sealing the boards?
I know there will be holes in them once I put up fur but just wondering bout anybody's thoughts.
Thanks

Completely unnecessary IMHO, but can't hurt anything if you want to give it a try.

I would think you would want that bit of absorption that bare wood gives. To help dry a pelt thats turned fur out.

Quick spray with wd40 and wipe with a rag-keeps grease off the fur when boarded fur in.

I've got boards that are "sealed" and boards that are bare. Definitely not necessary, but I like them sealed. It helps with slipping hides off the boards, and it helps with boards absorbing moisture. Neither is a deal breaker, and I use plenty of boards that are bare, more than are sealed, to be honest. But I like the sealed ones. Particularly when I am putting up furs assembly line at the end of the season. I can take a hide off a board, set the board in front of a fan for five minutes, or even not at all, and immediately put another hide on the board and it is dry, rather than putting a hide on a wet board. Same with turning hides that are done fur out, I can pull them off when they are partially dry, fur in, turn them and put them back on the board, knowing the board hasn't absorbed much moisture, and the hide will dry quicker than it will putting it on a damp board.

I have never done more than put a single light coat of polyurethane on when sealing them (including a few done with leftover stain and polyurethane). I don't think I would want a real thick coat of sealant, as it would tend to make the surface harder and more difficult to push pins in.
