Grandson wants to show his first beaver hide in a willow hoop. I've never done it before. 4H project.

I would “block” it out first before trying to hoop it. Warm water, sponge, and a beaver board and nails. Get it restretched after tanning. You’ll get most of the shrinkage back.

The hide is already professiomally tanned. The kid just wants to hang it on his bedroom wall.but wants it on a willow hoop.

The hide shrinks about 20% in the tanning process. Do what BigBrownie said to stretch it back out and then put it on the willow hoop with leather lacing pulled snug. You can use the leather lacing to lash the hoop together also.

Hooping it with some leather string is easy enough. Getting a nice piece of willow in the right shape might take a few shots. The wife makes them willow chairs and there’s a truck to getting them to bend nice. She puts all the 6’ lengths of willow into a 5g pail of water and leaves them in there all summer, pulling them out as required.

Here's some pics how I do muskrats. I'd do beaver the same way. I bend the willow when I cut it. Use rawhide to tie the hoop, and buckskin to lace the hide. Buckskin spots reinforce the holes for lacing.
