My mother said when she went to school that the teacher would send 2 kids with a water bucket down the hill to a springhouse(about a 1/2 mile)each school day
for water! Also said that the teacher would walk about a mile from his home and start the coal stove in the winter@ 5 o'clock to warm the school house up.

My mother's first teaching contract (a one room schoolhouse near Mitchell South Dakota) called on her to start the coal fired stove before school and help the kids put their horses away in the stable. That was in 1931.
