The country I’m trapping in right now is loaded with pocket gopher mounds. Bare fresh dirt shows itself everywhere. I have been using an old grubhoe to make a trench in the not flat ground and setting the trap, in this new dig. If I set on this loose ground, or on the edge of a badger dig, I still firm up around the trap, use minimal blocking, ie smallrocks(1”) and I know that the soil is loose everywhere around the area… proceed with the fabrication of the set…

Like Tejas, I use a brick hammer all the time. I never drive a stake with it. I force animals to the area of the trench and fine blocking works for me as nothing will step directly on a pebble. I didn’t come by this on my own, someone took the time to show it to me…coyote is a species of least concern in the venue within which I am working, but all animals can be caught here and my traps have to catch something as light as a skunk.

The grub hoe makes short work of things if you are not concerned about subtlety in the greater light of disturbed dirt all over the place when you arrive to begin with.

A grub hoe or Pulaski is a dream to whack out a trap bed with if a)you don't have to pack it and a separate hammer to drive stakes and b)you don't care about dirt flying everywhere.

The grub hoe is working here in this soil type. I use a wheeler, and the Stearns box on the back carries it, my Milwaukee drill and auger ,which can also buzz out the preliminary trap and chain area and dirt hole. Stake driver, and or stakes and traps and set bag. Front box for other hand tools ect. When l misplaced my trapstake hammer/ digging tool I threw my 8lb sledge into the large box temporarily.

I use a cordless weed trimmer liberally in this grassland Im trapping.
