Trade networks were massive. Obsidian from the NW is found in sites in Illinois. Macaw feathers from South America are found in the Ohio Valley.

K snow is absolutely correct. Illinois Hopewell and Ohio Hopewell have burial mounds containing copper from upper Michigan, shell beads from the gulf of Mexico (oops!), pipe stone from Minnesota, and mica from the Carolinas. The river systems were the Interstates of their day.

Because KRF is such a high quality lithic it is not unusual to find artifacts made from it at great distances from its source. This is especially true of artifacts made by Paleoindian cultures. These early cultures were very mobile and long distance transport of high quality lithics was not an uncommon practice. A number of Paleoindian artifacts made of KRF have been found in southern Nebraska at an approximate distance of 500 miles from the primary lithic source.

How do you know its not root beer flint from.texas?

I had a guy I knew found many Knife River flint heads in North Dakota. I just looked it up and North Dakota has Knife River flint on the Knife River etc,, in North Dakota. The heads could of come from various places in USA with trading and natives being a nomadic group.

We seldom see any cherts up here from the Edwards Plateau which is where Texas root beer chert originates. However it could very well be possible for the Texas root beer to show up this far north, especially from one of the highly mobile Paleo cultures.

Although Texas root beer does sometimes exhibit interesting inclusions I have not yet seen any that compares to the KRF from North Dakota with the obvious imbedded fossilized plant particles.

Interestingly, Alibates is another high quality lithic source from Texas and utilized by most of the southern Plains cultures but there again we seldom see it this far north. When we do see artifacts made of Alibates this far north they will most often be Paleo or Late Prehistoric.
