Buddy whos a mechanic called me to chat , got to talking about shop work and he said he can't believe how many women can pull into the shop for a basic oil change or something and when he gets under the hood or pulls it around he can see multiple thing wrong . No fluids , brake pads about gone , suspension wrecked , warning lights all over the dash ect . Said he'll try and get them to get more work done but most just kinda shrig it off or feel he's trying to rip them off . Says (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) see them driving those cars around town all the time . Mean while it seems guys come in and they have blown fuse or something and the whole vehicle is dead lined .

Idk how that works because I've seen the same with with wife and our friends cars ,seriously ,got into drive one of their cars one day and it felt off , go to check , and not a drop of oil on the dip stick asked how long as it been acting like that and I get a shrug and " o about a week" added some oil and the dang thing is still goin today crazy same goes for some other stuff , break pads , coolant , driving on spares and idk... Not really about not checking or knowing how to do stuff... just how women seem to be able to keep the dang thing running when they should be dead or broken and in the shop...Think a lot of them are just witches or something and have mystical powers over vehicle reliability .....

Because fathers never took the time to teach them anything mechanical. Mine didn't leave home without knowing how to change the oil, tires, and brakes.

And some got taught but it was not there thing. I make it a point to drive ( barrow) my daughters vehicle now and then. Last month it was acting like the transmission was slipping. Its got 120k miles i checked and changed the spark plugs and coil packs. Problem solved. I think its about ready for an oil change come to think of it.

She know how to do it its not her thing. Dad takes care of it when I can. Talk to her about animals and you will be speaking her language (IF) you know what your talking about.

Men and women operate in different operating systems. Men are more logical and mechanical. Women more emotional and feelings. There is overlap and exceptions. It takes both and why it takes both to make a good team.

My friend Sarah drove to Dayton from Columbus. A little over an hour drive. She told me that shortly after leaving, her car started making lots of noise and handling funny. She asked if I could look at it. I walked out and from 40 plus feet away could see that the tire was gone. She had, had a flat and had driven long enough that only a tiny bit of rubber was left on both sides of the rim. There were grooves in the asphalt leading up to where she parked. It was amazing she hadn't wrecked.

I was flabbergasted. I couldn't believe she drove on a flat that long.

She didn't have a spare to get home, so I loaned her mine.

She has a doctorate in English, but no sense about motor vehicles at all.

My wife can change a tire if needed. I wouldn't trust her to change the oil though.

When we first started dating we lived 130 miles apart. She'd check all her fluids, air up the tires, etc when she'd come down to visit.

She keeps meticulous records on things.

She's also pretty OCD about getting her oil changed. That dummy light starts blinking that it's 500 miles til oil change time and she's making her appointment. I'd be if I looked at the ones for her car she's never gone more than 3100 between oil changes.

Me on the other hand. I'm paranoid about my tires, but I'll push an oil change out as far as I can.

She's also harder on brakes than me. I can get a lot more miles out of mine than her.

My wife will not let anyone do any additional work without consulting me.

She feels (and I assume a lot of women do) that in general service people take advantage of people who don't have knowledge of things.

I do scratch my head at some of the vehicles on the road with multiple issues that just keep going where like you say some minor thing would have me on the side of the road

Or if they do add oil, leave the oil cap off.

About right. I’m always busy making sure there is food in the house for both us and the pets. Taking care of pets medical needs, always watching the fish in the pond looking for signs of trouble and testing the water for ammonia , nitrates, dissolved oxygen, etc.
While he is researching car parts, I’m planning a menu for the week.
It’s not that I ignore vehicle issues, I’m usually too busy in my brain with other things to even attempt to assess them. Teamwork makes that possible. If I can’t help with mechanical stuff I am going to tow the line in some other way that benefits the household.

After working on vehicles for a living, I don't know which were worse, soccer mom vans or small farm pickups. Both seemed like filthy death traps that were miracles going down the road.

Same reason why when they do say the car is doing something funny, it never happens when somebody else drives it

Still don't explain how they can still have these cars driving around when they should be dead and on the side of the road . Again I call witchcraft

plenty of them are

or they tell their dad or husband maybe boyfriend when it gets real bad.

and don't blame the fathers

my daughter showed up to easter , I told them I would change the oil , I go to pull it up on the ramps and and it sounds terrible , the power steering pump is groaning.

so I do the oil change , then start looking over the reason for the noise
fluid is low , but it is more than that.

guess who got to replace a power steering pump on easter started that oil change at 2 and finished the power steering pump about 7

IF YOU EVER THINK AN OIL CHANGE IS GOING TO FIX THE NOISE STOP RIGHT THERE TURN OFF THE CAR AND CALL ME.
Oil changes prevent noises , they fix nothing.

I have calendar reminders for the kids to check their oil I check it when I see them.
it probably sounds a bit demanding but they will pull up to the restaurant of course late but that is a estrogen issue I think it slows down clocks or something mystical I have no idea but a woman on time is a very rare thing. If you have one that is always on time you have an anomaly.
the will pull up to the restaurant and I will just say pop your hood and check all the fluids before we go in to eat.
technically it is my car that my MKE kids drive so I feel justified in barking pop the hood.

they can learn about a month after changing the power steering pump they said it is groaning again , check the fluid level, low , I searched the nearest autopart store and had them drive there and fill it up and keep checking it till they could bring it too me

the high pressure line developed a leak so then that had to be replaced

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I like what Warrior said. My dad taught me a lot, but I'll expand that to brothers, buddies and boyfriends for me. All in the 1970's. Not much on newer vehicles! I could work on any of Nessy's cars. laugh

Anything logical, analytical and mechanical is in my wheelhouse. Some women, especially from another generation, come from another place. If a lady of the past era lived with a husband who maintained her vehicle exclusively, she may have never been in that role. If she later found herself widowed and on her own, it would be extremely tough for her to take her car in or even know when to do that. Afraid of driving into a repair shop and being nervous about not knowing where to go or what to say could keep her driving when she shouldn't.

Wolfdog, I think it's funny that those people could drive with seemingly disabling problems with their vehicles. I can see it happening though. Maybe it is witchcraft! Or someone bigger looking out for them? smile

Diane prides herself on being able to work on vehicles. Her great grandfather was Jack Mack, who founded Mack Trucks. Almost her whole family likes working on vehicles. Her dad and brothers taught her to do a lot. She's learned much more on her own. She does most of our repair work, but I do most of the breaking loose and tightening on our rusty farm trucks.

She's close to incapable of making it anywhere on time without my management. I have never had even a single woman, who could be on time, most of the time. Like women who can work on cars, I'm sure they exist, but they aren't common. Stereotypes are never absolute, but they exist for a reason.

Every time I fix one of my wife's gadgets, I make sure to inform her that women would still be living in caves if it were not for men.

To be fair, I have known some men that had no man card.
