I have some high school buddies that have done it for Prairie Chickens in south central S.D. with fair success. They glass for birds flying in to feed in cropland at daybreak, then set up along the fenceline along the rural road and pass shoot. I no longer have the health to follow a dog, so this may be the only way i will ever have a crack at a Greater Prairie Chicken. It's one of those bucket list things.

What's the chances if you shoot one that it lands in the ROW? Seems a high probability its going to fall on private land you wouldn't have permission to recover it from.

Right of ways are very wide in south dakota, pretty good chance of keeping it in the right of way.

Quick glance at their rules. It seems to read that you can access private property to retrieve downed "small game" birds are also listed. Only rule is you cannot carry your firearm. G.

Good bird dogs will retrieve them. It's completely legal in SD.

Early season before they get a lot of pressure it’s not uncommon to find chickens in the ditches, trick is to find them with enough cover to put a sneak on them,
Have also had success doing it the way your buddies do it, usually later in season when they group up into bigger flocks. It’s not a very high percentage game though.
Best bet might be to find a outfitter what runs pointers and hunts off horseback.
