Hutterites bought a farm (270 acres) about 5 miles from here. I believe this will be the second colony in MO. Have read up on them and seem pretty interesting. Not sure what their colony industry will be. Have any experience or knowledge of them?

They must be moving South.

We have a group in Hermiston Oregon. They farm potatoes as the cash crop , they have their own apartments but there are no kitchens in the apartments , they have a separate communal kitchen and dining area. They raise a lot of their own food and livestock only buying things they can't raise,that's how I met them I was was selling citrus fruit wholesale at the time. They gave me a tour of their kitchen and there meat processing rooms.I was very impressed with their kill floor and hanging coolers which everything even the rails in the cooler were stainless steel. they have a few communal cars and truck that they can check out to drive into town if they need to see a doctor or get something from the store.Very good people that just want a fair deal on any trade with them. The men love hunting season and hunt deer and elk and game birds.

Yes, worked with them in North and South Dakota.

I doubt it will be the last farm they buy if they are just moving in........

There are a lot of hutterites here. I think they’re good people. Each colony has multiple businesses they run and do good work at very good prices.

I wouldn’t be worried about them moving in.

Years ago there was a show on TV about a colony of the I believe was in MT. It was a very interesting show how they all worked together to get some of the bigger jobs done.

Hutterites figured prominently in the movie The 49th Parallel. A group of fleeing Nazi submariners on the run take refuge in a Canadian settlement.

Hauldimones = similar to Hutterite but one family, kids usually go to school

We used to have two or three big RV's full of Albertan Mennonites come out every summer for strawberries. They would pick, wash, de-stem, and freeze all out there in the field. Usually go home with 1000-2000 lbs of berries.

I never heard of them, had to look them up. it sounds like they share similar values with the Amish and Mennonites which we have a lot of around here.

The biggest difference is their communal living which neither the Amish or Mennonite practice.

That’s why I mentioned trout ponds. The Hutts about 1/2 hour north of me got good fish. But they got their meat hooks into everything.
You ever heard of Koro traps? Yep, the Hutts own the name now.

The other one in MO I believe makes metal gates/panels for hog/chicken/turkey buildings. Is "Hutts" their nickname?

lol there is a big difference between voluntarily being part of a religious community and sharing things with said community and coercion by force of the government.

The Amish are the most unfettered capitalist in the world. I grew up in the largest Amish settlement in the world, furthest thing from communism you can imagine.

Never had a problem with them, they are good at what they do.
Trading is what I do, but they do like cash.

All I can say is that they are as good of people you can find. Hard working stay to themselves and a self supporting group that live a simple life as they can. I never have had an issue with and say what they are going to do if you hire them. Nothing but respect for them.

Swimming in long dresses often ends badly for the girls

We have a bunch around here, several colonies, They pretty much stick to themselves unless they are trying to sell you things, By and large they are alright but some of their business is shady, their wine is fruit juice with some alchohol added, if they run low on produce they go to Costco or Sam's and buy from there to resell. See them in Walmart and such all the time.

Those of us that have grown up south of Minnesota will read Hutts but northerners pronounce it as Hoots. Often shortened to hoots as referring to the hutterites up north.

I never realized Missouri was deep south (according to North Dakotans) until I lived up there as I always figured there were 2 states north of me and 2 states south of me.........North Dakotans pretty much figure everyone south of them are deep south........

You betcha and ehhhh are for real and I never knew what a "hot dish" was as we called it casserole..........

I never observed a lazy Hutterite, never. For that matter I can't say I have observed lazy Amish, Mennonites, or Hutterites - work ethic should be modelled by many other Americans.

I don’t know, might be the intention and good for the colony. They’re probably pregnant by the time they get the dress dried out.

A few years ago we were pulling the distribution line off their property at their request. Knocked on the door to the main place to give them an heads up that we’d be on their land for a few hours, and a smoking hot mid 20ish girl comes to the door! I forgot what I was even doing there for a sec……lol

A friend of mine lives near Great Falls and has pointed out one of their farms which was well kept, but he says when they go into town they are followed by store clerk because they are known for shop lifting according to him. He said they are banned from some retail stores.

Maybe their religion should merge with the Muslims and hands should be forfeit.

My experience was a little different. As much as they were a self contained colony, they didn’t like following laws. I remember the problems Mower County, Minnesota, had trying to get them to put in septic systems. The Hudderites liked to flush everything into an open pond. And, of course, it overflowed with big rains. If you were downstream of these ponds, well, you get the idea.
