Pocket set?

LMAO! I’ve NEVER made a “pocket” set anytime during my 72 years of trapping and do NOT intend to ever make one even when my end comes!

I’d go with the pocket set. I make them over and over.

Very early on I decided to specialize in specific animals such as mink, fox, coyote, etc so as I’m sure most on this board have read me saying that learning the inherent behaviors of animals is the key to trapping success is also the key to trapping specific target animals. The better you know them the higher the success rate! I liken it to welding, 95% of the people who weld can see the puddle but very few can actually see the periphery of the puddle and what is happening there! The indepth knowledge of the inherent behaviors of an animal I liken to being able to see and understand the intimate details of the periphery of a weld puddle!! In addition to that, 3 out of 4 of our coon have poor color AND I hate putting-up coon when I don’t need to!! LOL

Trapping is super easy. Study your target and know the 5 “W”s.
Not sure why there’s so much info on how to set traps or snares, it’s so basic.
Finding the right reading material on your target species can be hard, especially wolf. There’s a lot of pro & anti management books out there that’ll leave out or ignore important facts. You need to find 5he ones that aren’t biased.
Take what you learn with you into the bush. Spend some real time out there too.

I think I made a pocket set ages ago. Saw it in book, heard lots about it and plunked one in. No luck…..lol. I just set where the animal is already going, way easier. I’ll use natural pockets though, they’re already going there.

In my old area, Southeast Alaska mainland, it would be a cubbie built with natural surrounding material.
Those hooked everything on my line including wolverine, (my primary objective), marten, fisher, mink, otter, ermine, even wolves.

Your question is pretty vague, but ifin your talking a multi species waterline, I agree with you, there are so many critters I cannot-will not mention that have fell victim to my pocket sets.

baited box for marten mink skunk weasel fisher and squirrel
snared jackpot for fox lynx and wolf.
Dirthole pocket etc sets basically useless here in fur season.
many sets good for beaver but if just one would be snarepole.Good in open water and under ice.
For otter would be millette set.
If limited to one tool would be snare hands down for everything.

Pocket,cubby,dirt hole…all are similar baited sets.

No one set. Ever situation is different and I would only plan for that target. How can you limit yourself.

A blind set isn't just one type of set. It can take a thousand different forms. Even a flat set on a trail is just a blind set with lure. So, I'd say a blind set, but with lure in some situations.

It's just a question.. don't think too hard about it. Lol

If I could only make one set? I'd set another trap with dad.

To me there are basically only two sets.

Blind sets whether on land or water in whatever form you want that to be with foothold, body grip, snare

And a set with attractor that draws animal over/thru a trap where you weren't 100% sure it was going to be. Can make any variety or twist that you want all depending on where you're at and what have to work with.

Not sure I could exclusively pick one of the two. To me the blind set is likely the ultimate of sets and I've grown very fond of it but it relies on awful good understanding of critter behavior and movement in the area you are operating. Whereas that 2-3 feet margin of error that you may gain with an attractor is more forgiving than couple inches without so sets with scent or perhaps visual cues give us options that we might not so easily have if only running blind sets.

Some critters i'm basically 95% blind setter. Others probably 70-95% lured depending on time of year, area and my mood.

If i was fur trapping coyotes in my conditions it would be a dirt hole, they just out produce all the other sets here. If I had to pick one set for coyotes in all conditions it would be a flat set. I have been using some blind sets and they are the ultimate for the smart coyotes but are a low producing set when you have a high population and a lot of open country and no snow. Plus I catch alot more non targets in them.

Every set has its advantages and disadvantages, best thing you can do is learn what they are and use the right set at the right location at the right time to minimize the disadvantages and maximize the advantages.

I came back from a nest predator job a few days ago. In the setting of footholds,in almost every instance, took my grubhoe and made a trench, punched a hole in the back at the bottom,and bedded a trap just in front . This set took every species of predator that can set off a 1 3/4-#2-550 sized close jaw trap. Ie: skunk,coon,badger,fox and coyote. I hardly made a set without the use of the grub hoe.

I did use 4 other types of trap though.
