Anybody use these? Like or dislike and why and why not. Thanks

Cost' too much, I make do with what's there.

At $1.50/lb why would anyone use them? I sold waxed dirt for the same $$/lb and waxed sand for $0.50/lb less. Peat moss is only $0.40/lb and the waxed soil and the peat moss are not only cheaper but waaaay better to use in wet, freezing, weather!! Cover hulls are way, way outdated as are the books maybe you’ve been reading! LOL!

I’ll tell you all an old time trick of limited use…when you’re out on the lake shore,the sand is dry, you bed your fox trap and very tight without fluffing,push the cattail off the stem tight around the pan like a curled weiner, so sand cant go beneath the pan,and slip a little snow without sifting,or sand over the trap…voila, a freeze proof set barring rain.

I bought a bag many years ago and have a little bit left. I have used it on my cat sets in the snow. It works for me but like others say its not the cheapest way to go.

I’ve used them for a number of years. They work but are problematic. Wind can be especially challenging, bedding can be difficult as well. A cone shaped trap bed helps considerably but in frozen conditions that’s often a challenge as well. In my opinion they are Better than peat moss in freezing and thawing conditions but not by much

I put up 70 gallons of waxed sand this summer for a reason. FWIW.

When I first lived in eastern Washington, we had an open, cold early winter. No snow but hard freezing temperatures. I got some cover hulls at the trapper’s rendezvous and thought I’d give them a try. I used the two bags I had to rebed some of my coyote sets. The forecast was for more of the same and light to no wind. You guessed it. That night 40 mph winds. The next morning I had one coyote who probably found the set before the wind, and not a single buckwheat hull anywhere. On any of the sets.

I never tried them again.

They still frost over and you end up with a crust over the trap. You could lift the crust off like a hard pancake when checking. Were not freeze proof enough for me for winter coyote work here. I tried and tried several seasons with cover hulls and finally gave up on them here. Maybe early work, but not late season here.
Same with bone dry peat it wasn’t good enough protection either. I needed something natural looking but would fire no matter how cold or how much freeze thaw we were dealing with.
Waxed dirt is only thing I found that works for me reliably here.
