Thinking about buying one to cut brush in my woods. Anybody have one? What's your opinion of them?

I used the DR and the Billy Goat and the Billy Goat is a better machine.

I have used one that I borrowed from a friend in the past and now own one myself. They had different size engines but I was impressed by the way they work. I’d seen the commercials and wondered if it was hype but after using one was sold on them, they are cutting machines. I recently used a billy goat mower and couldn’t really tell any difference in the way they cut and the size of the material they cut, both machines did really good. I did like the levers on the handles of the Billy goat that control forward and reverse,makes it a lot easier than having to shift back and forth from forward to reverse. I don’t think you can go wrong with either one.

Will they cut brush up to one inch?

I have a DR, had it for 25 years. Kawasaki 15 horse, still going strong. It will cut a 2.5 inch tree. Put it in 1st, drop the handle low and it will climb up the tree pushing it enough to get to the blade and then it will chop it down. I like it for mowing off my wildflower patches and places where I can't get bigger equipment in.

I was going to buy one, but renting seemed a little better since I only really need it a few times. Can rent the one at Home Depot and it can cut larger than 1`", just need to ease on to it. Those machines can really clear some brush. Take a battery powered hedge trimmer with you. if you have briars like I do here you will need to trim them back to get to the base without getting all cut up on the forearms.

I've never run a DR, but I do have a 1970's Gravely two wheeled tractor from my late grandfather. I have a few attachments for it, including a brush cutter. It works well but I wish it had more power. I did modify the split rim wheels to fit very wide aggressive tread tires instead of the thin litle tires that come on it. That made it a beast on soft ground.

Yes on cutting the 1 inch, depending on what kind of tree it won’t even rev the motor up. Just bam and it’s gone
