My groundhog just loves carrots.

He has been going in and out of this de activated cage trap for a few days gobbling up some nice juicy carrots.
He will be in for a bit of a surprize soon.

Why are you feeding him? Could have caught it with first carrot. Or just positive set the hole.

Using a 160, I don't feed 'em

That's a pile of 'chucks for sure, Hern. 160s work great for them. I prefer footholds, cause I like to eat them. Summertime temps and BG's don't add up to fresh meat, LOL.

You ever put any of them up? Groundhog skin is tough stuff, like squirrel.

Ive put up quite a few through the years. They are thick leathered and great for teaching people how to flesh for their first time. They don't tear or rip so kids build confidence using a two handled flesher

They were pretty popular down South for shooting bags in the blackpowder days. Tough, long wearing leather. I've got a friend who alum tans them for shooting bags.

I like tanning them.
Best fur ones are in may when they first pop up after hibernation.They make a nice hat when used with red fox.
The pelts go down hill fast when they first come out in spring.
They make tough hair off leather.
I will probably take this guy out to a place on my trapline a nice little natural clearing in the bush on some high ground.They are not over abundant here,but the neighbors in town dont like when the odd one finds their gardens.

When I was a kid we trapped hundreds of them, at the time we were getting 2 dollars for them from mepps or just a dollar for the tail, like others have said there not bad eating

Never heard of Mepps buying chucks. When was this?

Old timers around here used the hide for their banjo face. They said it makes a better sound.

They are excellent eating. Young of the year ground hogs are best when the roasting ears are ready was my grandmother’s thoughts. We ate a lot of them.
