In the attic. Any suggestions on how to get a oneway door. Or something to help them out.

A bit of a run down. 3 generations living in one house. Car port packed like only a horder can and wife said from the porch she could see a small path to get through the house. I have never been inside only sat in the car when we made a delivery. They are not good friends and well im not going to volunteer to go in the house and get into the attic. Can't imagine what all may be piled up in there. I wont be geting on a ladder but may make something and get one of the boys to install it. She asked for a suggestion so I figured I would ask here and relay the info

The squirrels would likely chew back in somewhere else. I would trap and kill the offending squirrels and then seal it.

I once used a style of colony trap mounted over a hole like that.
Then just dispatch as needed.
Like stated they ain't gonna just move away.

o Thats a fun one, uneven trap attachment area.

I Use a trap that has a one way shut, but they stand on the door flap/ tab Spring loaded when the first one trips the trap if it's securely attached to the wood on that wall and you've secured the right side of the trap, where it would be uneven with wire or chicken wire. A lot of times you can roll up chicken wire and make just a barrier that you attach under a wing on the trap on that trap. There would probably be to wings. Attach with a washer in a screw. And then you'd have to fill in the right side to even out the gap...

Put up a second trap on a small shelf at U. Attach right near the hall. Because of some squirrels that live in that particular house are out. Feeding and come back and there's a one way. Door on there. They will fight like heck and even chew to get back in. But if you set a secondary trap on a shelf, you'll catch the ones that come home and know you will not start catching any others in the neighborhood. Because you don't go up to your neighbor's door and try to get in, do you... Animals are the same way they know that if they go to another's hole, there will be a fight, trap them. And dispatch, you can pm me for ideas...
The best bait i've ever used is LT Grey's Black Walnut lure

$220.00 morning ... Plus the ninety dollar inspection, which took me about twenty minutes to find two different holes...

This is how I would do it.

Use pan head/truss screws at the X marks tight to the jaw bends to hold the trap. Anchor the chain, attach a box swivel to the ring, out away to swing it clear of the hole.

You can add nearby cages.

BTW, 120s work even better but that extra spring often gets in the way in tight spots.

Thanks, I will relay the info. How many are there typically when someone "thinks they have A squirrel". Its a bit of a drive if i were going to stick a 110 up there is wouldn't want to make it a daily drive for a week. May be betwr to sight in my 20 cal Sheridan and sit in a chair in the yard about daylight for a few hours and shoot them in one trip.

Typically it's going to be an adult female and current litter if we're talking grey squirrels. She'll keep any others run off. If a large enough structure they might subdivide it with different females occupying different locations but this is rare. She may be anywhere along in the process from prepartum to post. You won't know until you have her in hand. If post partum but still early you may be going into the attic to retrieve pinkies. If later they may or may not come out on their on, there is a short window where the young are mobile but will go no further than just looking out the entry. Past that point they will come out to get caught as well.
When you catch a big male, usually after a few days of no activity, on his way into the structure you know that the job is done.

Fox, and reds I have no experience with. We got fox but they behave themselves here and give people and structures a very wide berth, you won't even see one in the yard.

Fliers will vary by season and all noise will be noturnal. Summer breeding, a pair and very rare for them to enter during sommer. Winter, the entire flying squirrel clan will take up residence huddling for warmth so its trap until none. Traps should be victor rat snaps inside on known travel routes, the tight spots like eaves, and on latrines. You can ring a hole with snaps or use a small coni like a 55. Sealing the structure is the only way to stop them, one way devices work.

Not sure if it made it to the archives but Jonesie, Ron Jones, did up a really good grey squirrel thread in the ADC forum called the six stages of the grey squirrel, or it may have been a podcast on the old Robb Russell site.

Another thing, cages aren't always the better option to 110s with squirrels. Squirrels are particularly vulnerable to stress and weather related mortality. So if using cages check early and often, wrapping cages can help as well.

Im just going off what I was told and would put little stock in that. She just said squirrel. Heck it could well be a coon for all I know. Not sure if that hole is big enough by looking at the picture. We have both gray, fox, and i saw a flying once in my life.

But in town typically its always fox squirrels. Seldom ever see a gray in town.

Total opposite here. Greys everywhere and they thrive in town. To even see a fox you got to get out away from town and even then they're going to be on the field edges and open fields away from houses and structures.

Matter of fact in over two decades of trapping for hire I've never caught a fox squirrel in a trap of any kind nor gotten a call to do so.
