Some of you probably have a rain barrel. how do you keep the mosquitos out.

Throw a couple of goldfish in. They eat the mosquito larvae.

What rain

Yeah, what is this "rain" you speak of? My rain barrels have been basically empty since April. I figure I have lost or will lose close to half my fruit trees. The ones within a 100 yards of the house I can reach with the hose.
For skeeter control they sell Mosquito "dunks" in a donut or granular form. It kills the larva before they hatch and is safe around pets and livestock.

Yeah, rain is few and far between here. In my barrels and otter sleds, the skeeters go to lay their eggs. Using the mosquito bits(Waaaaay cheaper than dunks!), the bits wipes out the larvae, the laying mosquito croaks. It`s kind of like nuisance trapping and I don`t even have to leave the yard. I thought when we get one of those really bad skeeter years, I would go scarf up some of the used tires, place them strategically around the yard, add water and bits and it might do a decent job of keeping them down. Like a mosquito long liner.

I have lots of tree frogs that keep about 5000 gal of rainwater full of tadpoles. I don't mind since it is all for the stool. I still strain it to keep the frogs out tho.

BITS! That is what they are called. They make a HUGE difference.

I don't need any rain barrels here. I can use thimbals!

Put out 2 bucket mosquito "traps" with the bits, have to use a lot more bits than they say but it seems to be working.....a barrel or decorative little pond will be mosquito larvae free with a few 10 cent feeder goldfish....in the ponds they might even over winter if it's deep enough and winter isn't too severe..

Some commie states forbid you from catching rainwater on your property including building a pond. The states consider it state property, like wildlife in most states.

As dry as it is, I haven't seen a mosquito this summer.
