No, that’s not how it works, even if we’re working on IRs. Our huge projects are different though. These two aren’t paid by one of them “Man Power” companies or the band, they’re full time groundmen and travel the province wherever the work may be.

Their boss does have to keep an eye on them. I had to deal with an upset customer where one of the boys flipped off his security camera. All good, little discussion with the kid, boss & customer. These two had an unsurprisingly rough upbringing.

There’s a method for a whitey to have successful results in an isolated IR. I think that’s why I get sent to these start up projects and disputes. They show a lot of respect for a trapper who shows he understands them and knows some of their history better than they do. They love old trapping history too. If you walk into their turf showing no respect, you ain’t going to get nowhere.
I usually dig up some local trapping history and names from a local that I know who traps before I set foot on their land……goes a long way getting off on the right foot, and when some (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) derails it, ole shakey comes in to get things rolling again. Sometimes that involves sending a contractors employee or two packing.

I guess it does help when two of the flyin reserves that I’ve been to think that I’m a full patch HA…….lol.

Bear cat i agree the child labor laws are a ridiculous. On the flip side I taught the boys to hustle their own work.

I have been keeping track of the boys house worked and what they average making. Its been a little over $30 an hour. They are learning do the job right it keeps repeat business and spreads their name by word of mouth.

I prefer them to start out learning and thinking being paid by the job vs by the hour. That encourages them to be more productive rather than just putting their time in. Though they spent several days helping a friend clear brush out of fence rolls. Last week they were over there for a cook out and grandpaw had been keeping track of the hours they were there and paid them $15 an hour. They didnt do it for money and that had not been talked about they were just helping one of their friends do some chores.

My 16 year old has been talking about geting a part time job somewhere. For some small steady income over winter when thing slow down. I think it will be good for him to learn about taxes and low wage paid pre hour mindset employees think. Should give him some insight on what he will have to watch for if he expands his business and starts hiring people on how to motivate them and who to watch out for and not hire.

Didn't read all the pages. BUT you guys do know what they use on those fields to fertilize them right. SEWAGE sludge. Yes it's been treated but the micro organisms are still in it. Heck want to stop eating mexico lettuce? Do like my 84 year old mama been doing since she was 12 . Mound you up ahill of dirt and plant your own leaf lettuce.


AS for the Taco bell portion.

Sure are a lot of government rules to hiring people. Make sure you don't break any BP. I know I follow them all.

Dairy farmers do not use H2A workers as has been stated above. H2A are seasonal workers. Dairy is 24/7/365 and thus most workers on dairy farms are undocumented or are working legally until their visas run out. There is legislation that will be debated to change the H2A to include permenent workers. H2A workers cost a lot more than illegal workers which is why many farmers etc. work with the undocumented workers.
There was discussion about dairy farmers not having enough kids anymore to do the farm work. The industry has changed so much that now 1-2 owners may milk hundreds if not thousands of cows and they could never have enough kids to milk the cows. We want capitalism and we want our food as safe and cheap as we can get it, yet complain about the system that has evolved to provide what we asked for. I worked with farmers and the industry for 52 years before I retired. The transformation has been amazing. When I started my technical college teaching job our county had 54,000 cows milked on 1216 dairy farms. Today the county has just shy of 65,000 cows milked on 135 dairy farms. We live in an area where farms tend to be on the smaller side. The dairy areas outside of the midwest are even much larger on average than ours are. One of the real issues with the centralization of our dairy industry is that the workers for the most part do not live in the rural areas and thus the population in our rural agricultural counties is shrinking and aging rapidly.

Neighbor milks 1300 head, some 3 times a day. He said he could not stay in business without Hispanic labor. He pays well and provides housing, and the employees appear very happy. Tried hiring white people,2-3 days they are gone without saying goodbye.

My grandson milks cows, he's 15, on a sign up basis. $15 an hour for a 3 hour shift and it's so popular he can only get a shift now and then. Looks like it can be done legally, must easier or cheaper to do it illegally. No one should hire illegals for any job ever.

To be honest many seasonal fruit farms, nurseries, etc don't really know the legal status of their work force. When we use labor contractors the onus is on them, not us.

But we should care who these people are coming here to work

There are an estimated 12 million ondocumented workers in the USA and 20-25% are estimated to be working in agriculture, yet it is the farmers who should be fined? What about the 8 plus million that work outside of Ag?

ANYONE that knowingly hires an illegal worker should be fined.

Somebody asked what "my" solution would be.... If I had a good solution I would be a politician, not a farmer/trapper.

But what the heck, try this on for a solution:

An amnesty program that would provide a road forward to legal status ONLY to undocumented workers that have at least three years worth of taxes filed and paid via ITIN SS #'s.

Send all the other ones back from where they came from.

For those unfamiliar, if you have a SS number that does not match government records the IRS assigns an ITIN # to the account and collects taxes.

This way we keep those that are legit workers and helping the economy.

(Bet nobody likes my idea...but it's better than Reagan's amnesty plan of 1988)!
