Don't use cucumbers longer than 6"
Use an ice water bath for 1-2 hours before canning
Cut off the blossom end before canning
Using alum when canning

What other tips, tricks, and methods does this group have?

Side note, this is dill pickles only. Sweet pickles should be outlawed and banished...

Reguardless of what others say in here,,the Hot Water Bath at the end should NOT be skipped.Even the "Ball Book" says this step is "essential" to kill micro organisms that can cause spoilage. unless making refrigerator pickles.

For pints..plenty of fresh dill, half clove of garlic, half teaspoon of peppercorns, quarter teaspoon of mustard seed. Double for quarts. Brine..2 cups white vinegar, 2 cups water, 1/4 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons pickling salt. It takes alot of brine. Hot water bath 10 min for pints, 15 for quarts.
Today I tried not water bathing 9 jars. 9 fails. It did not work.

If the pickle turns yellow that tells the vine to shut down so look for those hiding
