The above is from instructions that came with MTP wax. Looks like seldom used about 1/2 as much.
Any organic material really soaks up wax.

Dirt, because of the organics JBS eluded to is why I charged 50% more for it over the waxed sand, Even the amount of wax I used in my sand was at times more than needed. I learned to cool my waxed sand & dirt in a HF cement mixer with a couple of softball-size rocks in the mixer to keep the waxed material from sticking so badly to the walls rather than the earlier raking method and I would get “pebbles” of mostly wax once it was cooled. I always screened every batch so I just recycled the pebbles in the next batch.

I never weighted any wax, I just learned by looks of the melted material and by feel how much I needed to use with each batch because it was always pretty much the same amount of sand or dirt. I also tested every batch as you see how I did that in my photos and I would also grab a handful of each batch after screening and give it a squeeze to see if it clumped and felt the way I wanted. I did this before the water tests btw.

Ten years ago when I started making waxed sand I posted my procedure on here. I use the solar method, so late June early July is the best time, sun is the highest in the sky.

Dry your sand any way you like, I simply pour it out on double layer cardboard and mix every few minutes until dry. Pour it through my sifter into a clean 5 gallon bucket. Do that until you have as many gallons of dry sand as you think you will need.

I use heavy, black plastic tubs (purchased at Lowe's) for the waxing process.



Spread approximately 2" of sand evenly in the bottom, sprinkle the flake wax over the top. Cover with clear plastic (painting drop cloth works ok). When wax is melted, uncover and mix with a garden trowel or 3 prong hand garden tool until thoroughly mixed. Repeat sprinkling flake wax to cover again, recover with plastic and remelt.

Uncover and remix again until no un-waxed sand or dirt is evident.

At this point the tub needs to be moved out of the sun, preferably with air blowing over the top (I do this in the garage, sometimes with a fan) and mix every 2-3 minutes to keep in from setting up like a chocolate brownie.

When cooled enough and mixed to desired consistency it can be poured into whatever container you want to use. I use 20 garbage containers. If the sand to wax ratio is correct enough the sand will clump up some, squeeze test can be used.
