I have two teenage sons that just completed a major achievement and I'm thinking about giving them a special gift to honor their accomplishment. I'm thinking about a custom engraved pistol with their name, rank, serial number, and maybe rank insignia.
I'm thinking a classic American pistol like a 1911 for it's military heritage.
Chrome, stainless, or blue? Custom grips work their rank insignia? Ivory? What brand / model? - USA made would be a plus.
Any suggestions or ideas? I don't know where to start.
Or... maybe a polished cutlass/sword or something like that.
What do you think?

1911, Parkerized finish, Pachmar grips, 8 round SS Mags, My gold cup w/adjustable sights can shoot a lot better than I can.

How would a oakwood finish look after engraving? Can they full it with something?

Ruger or kimber, any good gunsmith should be able to do the work you want or know who to get to do it. And thank them for their service

Ivory grips for sure à la Patton. Any engraving I would keep to bare minimum and tastefully done, small and discreet. I personally prefer revolvers. Why does everyone want to leave brass around as evidence?

Can Ivory be legally acquired in the US?

Yes you can acquire ivory in the US BOB, Under federal U.S. law, authentic Alaska Native handicrafts made from legally harvested walrus ivory are permitted, though several states enacted broader bans that created legal confusion. To resolve this, the federal ARTIST Act was signed into law on June 12, 2026

Staccato would have a heritage type function and feel but be more modern for actual use.
A neat 1911 would look good displayed and be fun to shoot a few times but a Staccato would be a gun you could shoot often and would be there for you if things got hairy. Just a thought from someone a bit younger than most of the guys on here.
