I have two teenage sons that just completed a major achievement and I'm thinking about giving them a special gift to honor their accomplishment. I'm thinking about a custom engraved pistol with their name, rank, serial number, and maybe rank insignia.

I'm thinking a classic American pistol like a 1911 for it's military heritage.

Chrome, stainless, or blue?
Custom grips work their rank insignia? Ivory?
What brand / model? - USA made would be a plus.

Any suggestions or ideas? I don't know where to start.

Or... maybe a polished cutlass/sword or something like that.

What do you think?

How would a oakwood finish look after engraving? Can they full it with something?

It all depends on your budget. If money is no object a Colt Government model with the information hand engraved with gold fill, a deep royal blue finish and ivory stocks either plain or with their rank, branch symbol. initials or special symbol to them. I would suggest you contact Turnbull Restorations and see what they can do and what it would cost. For the pistol you are describing expect to spend around 3000 dollars. Now you can go cheaper with standard finish, laser engraving and some type of different grip than real ivory. But it certainly sounds like a nice gift.

Personally I would avoid Colt unless you are buying a rollmark. Quality has fallen on hard times and nothing is hand tuned just parts assembled. That would be fine if parts were still held to USGI milspec as the standard for WWII guns was 2 each from each contract maker fully dissassembled all parts dumped into a bin and given a thourough mixing then parts randomly pulled and reassembled. The resulting parts guns were then taken out and had two magazines run through them. Unfortunately, Colt has pretty much led the way in deviating from the govt prints and the heavy use of cast or MIM parts. Heck, they've even been known to ship 1911s without any rifling in the barrel.

Ruger or kimber, any good gunsmith should be able to do the work you want or know who to get to do it.

I like the 1911 pistol idea, if they like 1911's and like to shoot. A sword is just something that will be unused and in their way for the rest of their lives. Keep the customizing minimal, but individual, so the pistols will be shot instead of just display pieces. Just my opinion.

Ivory grips for sure à la Patton. Any engraving I would keep to bare minimum and tastefully done, small and discreet. I personally prefer revolvers. Why does everyone want to leave brass around as evidence?

You could do two older used WW11 1911's or something, maybe from the service for the history of it / patina, and regrip it custom fancy...

You might be able to do something similar in a shotgun for hunting instead of a 1911. Have you seen some of the henry .22's? Thats an idea too or you can mimic that on something else.

To resolve this, the federal ARTIST Act was signed into law on June 12, 2026

Newhouse114 is a wonderful ivory carver. Might check with him for some personalized grips

Maybe check out genuine US issue 1911's from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. They are currently selling service grade pistols thru their website and also do in person sales at their range in Anniston Alabama if you're up for a road trip. All the info is on the CMP Marksmanship website. There will be a few extra hoops to jump thru but you are also getting a small piece of history.

Staccato would have a heritage type function and feel but be more modern for actual use.

A neat 1911 would look good displayed and be fun to shoot a few times but a Staccato would be a gun you could shoot often and would be there for you if things got hairy. Just a thought from someone a bit younger than most of the guys on here.

I thought about doing this very thing with my own sons.
A wood grip was what I wanted to get. Lots of laser engraver companies out there to put a message or whatever on the grip for you.
When my oldest got his masters I thought the college logo plus his name and grad date would have made a good gift to commemorate the event.
Just a thought. It’s a bit extra cost but makes it more personal than a standard over the counter purchased gun.

I dont think i would put personal identifying info on a gun. Even it it will never be sold or traded lost of things can happen. Customize, make it personal, absolutely but nothing personally identifying.
