Some of us don't have grouse or pheasants and quail are getting really scarce so turkeys are what we chase. Obviously, I mut not be a good turkey hunter because i have struggled on several springs. Maybe one of you experts would like to come teach me how it's done.

Ridge runner your facts are wrong. Never baited turkey but have killed my 2 fall Tom's for several years. We are allowed 2 turkey either sex in the fall. Shot a hen once lot of years back but only the one.

Can't use a rifle here but don't need too. I have an abundance of turkey on the farms I can hunt. All it takes is patterning them. Strutter decoys with hens seem to work better for me in the fall then just hens or jakes.

Got to say I have never killed what I consider a large buck but my kids have been killing nice tomd each spring. The youngest first was at 7 with 15lb bow. Yep some luck but he did it. They cant be to darn tough to kill. Though some years its a lot of hunting hard to get it done.

Using a shotgun does not mean your a good or better hunter maybe not as good of a shot but not any better of a hunter. Rifles have longer range but work up close just fine. Spring turkey around here its thick and shots are close.


Thats not saying some years the boys dont struggle to fill their tags( also on public land) but turkeys are not a smart animal. No birds are not very smart I dont care how much the myth of the wise old owl is pushed.

Keep arguing with each other like children, or embrace and be happy more people have methods to hunt with and the way they like. Unless all your really mad about is you may not be able to compete and be successful with more people out hunting.

The only valid argument I can see is safty considering how many people get shot with shotguns turkey hunting. But thats on the dummy pulling the trigger not the gun.

I kieed one with my truck years ago. They tend to fly up when vehicles get close and that gets them above the hood and buys them time deer dont get. They end up in windshields sometimes becuse of it.

The one I hit would have made it but I was pulling a 16' trailer with 4x4 Toyota sr5 and I slide when I hit the breaks. It flew up but not fast enough . Left a ding in the edge of my hood where its head hit it.

You wouldn't see it on the side of the road it went in the back of the truck and. was dinner.

For a challenge, try it the original, old-fashioned way. Make them fly first with a good Turkey Dog in Fall and Winter. I never hunted Merriams or Rio Grandes, hear they're dumb compared to Easterns, but wouldn't know. Believe rifles are allowed in MD, OK and VA.
