My wife thought “we” might like to go sky diving. Being a) squeamish about heights; and b) not thrilled about wind hitting me, at great velocity, in the face, I tried to talk her out of it. We compromised and found a wind tunnel sky-diving business just outside of Minneapolis. It was literally a blast! We’ll do it again. My wife did the high flying while I stayed at the body height level. Next time, I’ll do the high flying package too.

Next on the list will be rock climbing and learning how to rappel to finish the climb. We’ll do it at a climbing wall type business until we get the ‘hang’ of it.

Good for you and your wife, Teacher. Do those things before old age catches up with you!

Go jump out of a real plane. My wife and I did. Scared the crap out of me but I'm glad I did it. Worse part was my wife went first and when I jumped out she was a half a mile or more away and her chute hasn't opened. I didn't realize just how far and fast you fall and thought I was about to watch my wife die. Once her chute opened it was all good.
Promised my grandkids I would jump with them when they turn 18, but I'm hoping they will forget by then.

I would get a new wife... Oh, wait, I tried that.I'm still trying... Neither of those things for me

My wife took a chance early in life by marrying me. Can’t say I’ve been the level of challenge she’d hoped for but…53 years ago, she took the plunge. As for me, I’ve liked having my feet on the ground. Stability. But, since I retired I’ve learned to laugh at myself. Learned ‘falling in’ isn’t such a big deal. And getting my feet wet can lead to some very enjoyable experiences.

My trapping partner points out being human ain’t such a bad thing. Laughing at ourselves makes the day more than the catch. Taking time to smell the skunk whiz is part of a good day, just like any other. I’m claustrophobic and deathly afraid of heights. Flying in the face of 100 mile per hour wind took all of that away. It was fun being Superman. You can’t fall and likewise, you can’t fail, either. As my partner says, “it is what it is—take the first step and see where it takes you”. I did and we had a blast!

Hmm … I’m detecting a gradual sense of confidence your wife is helping you build. Before you start rappelling over the edge of a cliff, learn how to tie your own knots.

She and her sister are the bad-***es in our families. They’ve rappelled before. Her sister’s husband has his fears also. But no one in our group has done any rock climbing or rappelling together. This will be a first for everyone.

Well then. If I were so lucky as you, I’d put an Alaskan goat hunting trip on the list and bring those two along to pack it out. I wish you fun times and a safe descent.

Congratulations! Sky diving is a real rush. My first time was from 10,000 feet over Mexico and we opened the chutes at 3,000. Rappelling is fun too and you need to try it.
