MikeTraps2 OP trapper Joined: Dec 2006 Ames, IA	• King of the Ice by Helen Corbin • Publisher: Fox West (American Traveler Press) • Publication date: 1991 (some listings cite 1986 edition Synopsis King of the Ice is a 1991 nonfiction work by Helen Corbin, published by Fox West, that chronicles the life and adventures of Alaska’s most famous living bush pilot, Don Johnson. The book blends biography, travel narrative, and hunting memoir, offering readers a vivid look at Arctic flying, big-game hunting, and life in remote Alaskan regions. Review – I am not sure why this is not a better known or enjoyed book on Alaskan big game hunting. I found the stories, hunts, adventures equal to any other Alaskan book I have read. You have moose, sheep, mountain goats, black, grizzly, brown bear, even polar bears ! Lots of hunting remote regions or Alaska and some hunting and adventures in Nepal and Africa. He once found a flipped and sunken plan in a remote lake, somehow managed to flip it upright with help, repair it, and then fly it home and use it for hunts!!! I found his trips to supply camps interesting as he had to protect the eggs because if they froze and thawed the yolks were like rubber balls but the whites were fine. All in all a very good and enjoyable read of a book not mentioned much. Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure Theodore Roosevelt
