A little talked about fact is "The Bomb" saved literally countless lives on both sides. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I have a Japanese friend with dual citizenship. I think she came to America at age 14. I asked her about the bomb, and WWII in general. She said the 2nd bomb was unnecessary.

Her parents told her that once a city had been fire-bombed, it was safe to return because we didn't attempt to burn that city again.

Yes, bombing Pearl Harbor was not necessary also. My father was a naval combat veteran in the Pacific theater. Experts estimated 1 million allied casualties had the USA had to invade mainland Japan. Let alone how many Japaneses casualties. I and many others may not have ever been born, had the A bombs not been used.

Few people know or care about how close the German's AND the Japanese came to building their own atomic bombs. Think about that for a minute.

If the second bomb was unnecessary,,,

They would of surrendered after the first bomb

But they didn’t

Even after the second bomb there was an attempted coup to prevent the emperor from announcing the surrender.

The Japanese were well along in their own development of the atomic bomb and knew the US had already built one from respected sources so they weren’t surprised when the first one was dropped nor were they worried by it because according to their own research the fissionable material was so hard to produce that producing enough for a single bomb would take over a year so when the second one was dropped it shocked them because they no longer were sure about how many we might have

That second one was definitely needed or they would have never surrendered

As for the Germans they were a lot further away that when US troops seized documents about their research they were shocked that they weren’t further along
