On Aug. 9, 2026, USDA-Wildlife Services verified that wolves killed one and injured another hunting dog in the town of Port Wing, Bayfield County.

On Aug. 8, 2026, USDA-Wildlife Services verified that wolves killed a calf in the town of Lakeside, Douglas County.

Only 1300 wolves in the entire state as well, according to the wdnr, liars.

In the effort to delist wolves, Senator Ron Johnson (WI) made his unanimous consent motion on August 4. Senator Cory "Spartacus" Booker (NJ) objected.

The WTA is working to try to change this situation. It sucks.

One very important point for those of you who find yourself talking about this perhaps to folks who don't fully understand it, when talking about delisting wolves - removing them from the federal endangered species list - please immediately say that we are planning to move their management to the state level in each state so they can be managed locally. Sometimes, talking only about delisting sounds like we are working for no rules, no management.

No Jake, the fed trappers go to verify it was a wolf kill. As far as I know none of the offending wolves have been eliminated.

For livestock depredations aphis will remove a few wolves but not for hunting dogs, I know some hunters that were on the other side of the river from the Port Wing incident.

Let the dog hunters reap what they sow.
Dont know about wisconsin but they worked hard against trappers to get rid of snares in a lot of jurisdictions.
Snares are the most effective tool by far to manage wolves.

I know they removed a few wolves while they were delisted, but I think they quit now.

The dogs are one thing, but the calf should get some attention if it’s confirmed wolf. The state probably keeps the targeted wolf harvest on the down low?

2 yrs. ago, first day on the ice, setting the last lodge of the day, the dog and I got surrounded by a pair of wolves. It didn`t start out that way, I feel they were hunting deer to start with, but then it turned into something else. When I asked the trap molesting pig from the dnr how common that was, she said it`s mostly just people looking for an excuse to shoot another one. That`s real close to the quote. I know a trapper from up by Grand Rapids that got surrounded by wolves twice, just him, no dog involved. Another guy I used to know, they are hound hunters, they were chasing coyotes I believe and their dogs got attacked mid hunt. At least one of the dogs got killed, another badly injured, maybe a third with some injuries. These rats are just everywhere now. I won`t hardly let the dog out of sight, even at home, and we`re right next to the state highway, much less when we`re out in the bush. This situation is out of hand.

It's out of control.

I wonder if some dog or livestock owners might start using something like this:

WI allowed wolf cable restraints for wolves when we had wolf seasons, but I understand your point.

Theres a big difference between snares and cable restraints. Depending on specific regs, cable restraints can be next to worthless....

Our wolves can easily be caught in footholds. No need to snare them.

Really? So do they collar and release it 10 miles away or something? Sounds like this is gonna get worse before it gets better.

That changes real quick once a season is opened.

Do they know the difference between a coyote set and a wolf set?
