One wrapped around a link in the chain. And another attached to the chain with them little hog ring things. If a tag gets chewed up I am still covered. And the rules don't say you can only have one tag per trap. G.


I always put 2 per trap on the canine traps. Both on the chain. Good idea.

I have always used a set of metal stamps and put my name on the bottom of the pan I use tags for snares. conis I stamp the dog.

I roll all my trap tags around the spring pin where it crosses the frame of the trap between the dog and pan. Never had one come off or be chewed on. Smaller long spring just get wrapped around the chain. Body grips rolled around spring and slid between a coil of the spring.

If you are just looking for alternative ideas... You can print these off, make them say 4" long, stick them through the chain, and perfectly fold it over in half and stick to itself, so its 2". Do it twice on diff links if you want. You'll be surprised how durable it is. They don't tear. These are automotive type plastic indestructible stickers. Above they talk about dissolving I guess I don't do anything like that and don't know how they would hold up to soaking in some caustic chemical. They soak in creeks just fine. Print 100 of them and keep them in an old skoal tin and throw them in the truck door pocket. I've heard some people just fill that skoal tin up at work for cheap.

I put mine on the trap chain with a hog ring. I then fold them over onto themselves a couple times then pinch them flat with a pliers.I have never had one destroyed yet by an animal.

I attach my trap tags with needle nose pliers onto 1/2 of a link on my trap chain. I learned this trick many years ago when visiting Neil Olson in Maine.

Just put a small bend on one end of the tag large enough to hook over 1/2 of the link on your chain. The tag will look like a J on one end. Pinch the bent area of the tag against the chain link and use your needle nose pllers to continue to wrap the tag tightly over the last lap until the tag is snug and tight to itself. I am with gman 2 tags per trap. Just to be safe.

I use the tip of my needle nose pliers to make my initial bend in the tag. Once you do this a few times it will be a very quick process once you get the muscle memory established.

Pinch the tag firmly with pliers once you are done with each tag. Keep your tag wraped tight and they will hold fast indefinitely. Also place your tag where it is not likely to get alot of stress from biting.

Never lost a tag doing this. The old methods I used I would frequently lose a tag from the animal biting at the chain. Tried most all of them over the years.

If you attached your tag to the trap itself the GW will have to pull your set to check for a tag.
Put it on the chain somewhere where they can see it and check it.
Ours are hog ringed to the chain and we have never lost one.

Not necessarily having any problems,, but I plan on trapping some public ground this season and was thinking if they were trying to steal it,, the tag on the frame might be a deterrent.

Seeing a tag riveted to the frame MIGHT be a deterrent. Maybe it could, maybe it wouldn’t.
They probably wouldn’t want to mess with trying to remove the tag.
Of course some people could simply toss it without the intent of even taking possession of it… but most of the time trap thieves like to take them home for trophies

I wouldn't over think it

I seem to have the least issues when rolling them tight on top of themselves like this. Still get enough chewed beyond the point where you can even unwrap them let alone read them but it’s fewer than just a wrap or two over a link.

In order for that to work you or a game warden would have to catch them red-handed. It would take but a few seconds to pop off a riveted tag with a good knife or screwdriver, probably longer for one wrapped around the chain. I would venture to guess most people that steal traps have no idea there is a tag on it.........at least until they get home and look it over.

or use a nail to make a second hole and hog ring or short wire to attach it refering to whitebeards post to fold it over so both holes match up
