You should use the knowledge of what it hit to evaluate the terminal performance of the bullet not the recovered bullet to guess at what it might of hit.

They find the bullet in the animal or on the ground? Rare to recover a bullet on a pass thru

I have recover 2 139 gr 7mm interlock shot out of a 7mm-08. One a doe I shot looking at me in the head at 85 yards i found the bullet under the skin at the base of the skull. The other was under the skin 60 yard shot my son made. Deer was quarting to us he shot a litke forward if point of the shoulder a few inches bullet went throu neck meat behind shoulder throu the spin at an angle and stoped under the skin.

I have found others from 110 gr v max from 300 black out a few times , several from 45 muzaloader and 357 carbine when angled shots.
.

I was really surprised to find the 7-08 though here is the 708 that went through the spine the one that went through the head was just a chunk of lead fraged out a bunch no longer hav a picture of it.
