The title says it. I am looking for a companion dog, 20-40 pounds for female. Low shed would be a plus. I have owned German Shepherds in the past and like their loyalty and intelligence. Their shedding was crazy.
Neighbor has a Texas Healer that is smart as a whip and probably smarter than some people. Healers also tend to adopt one person (a good trait). A Healer might be too nippy?
Friends with Spaniels tend to like them very much.
What say you?

We have English bullies if you want a sit on your lap or by ya just to hang out couldn't ask for anything better. Not high energy either. Cousin has wineriners probably spelt that wrong but that dog does everything from ride in to the car to the boat, seems like a pretty good companion plus may have some more use then a bull dog lol, they are not good for much.

Labradoodle. No shedding. Get one that will not be high strung. My daughter Mable is a great dog but pretty high strung. I’m sure they are not all that way. Very smart for a dog

If you have Amish in your area, I would check to see if they have any mix farm dogs. Here in Ohio, many of the Amish farms I go to have mixes that have border collie, jack russel, Austalian cattle dog/blue heeler, English shepherd and Australian shepherd in them. They are in the size range you want, super smart, super loyal and very useful. There's usually about half a dozen adult dogs like that on a farm. They run loose. They spread out on the farms. If a person shows up, that does not belong there, the closest dogs bark a few times, than come up and greet them. If a predator shows up, they run up barking continuously, calling all the other dogs in and then kill the predator or drive it off.

All the dogs on neighboring farms know each other and will aid each other. The dogs never wander far because farther away dogs, they don't know, will gang up and chase them back.

They are very healthy and live until their mid to late teens, without ever seeing a veterinarian.

I had an Aussie Shepard for 10 years, the best dog i ever had. Smart and cunning that made you wonder how intelligent they are. Friendly and love attention. Not alot of shedding, only seasonal that i remember.

She was about the size of a coyote 35-40#.

Mini Aussie. Very smart. Loyal. very good around children. I have two of them. They become very attached to their owners. Shed like any normal dog.

One that matches your activity level and your use for one. If you get a breed that is breed to have a job and u dont give it enough stimulation it can cause problems. Herding dog need lots of stimulation from my experience

You don't want a herding dog unless you can wear them out, which generally is not possible, cause you're not gonna like the games they come up with to amuse themselves.
Though Australian shepherds are a little more chill..

Don't rule out a medium poodle, smart, don't shed as much, and you don't have to shave them that ridiculous show clip...

If you don't have a job for it I say go to the shelter and just get a mutt. See way to many people get wrapped in in the breed thing for one reason or another and end up with a working breed or some sort and no outler for it and then the problems start .rescues seem to be a lil more thankful and we'll behaved for a good owner too ..as messed up as that sounds but seems when they go from a bad situation to a good one with some lobe they don't forget and tend to show it . Neve understood why folks don't like mutts more

I agree with wolfdog and BigBob. check out the shelters and the rescues first. Lots of loving, loyal dogs there that need someone to give them a chance and a good home. My wife and I have gotten 2 purebred Golden Retrievers as puppies free, one from the pound and one from a rescue situation. They've been great dogs. I don't see us ever paying for a pet as there's plenty of good ones out there.
