Local Military base that stores old munnitions has a quota deer hunt every year. You must enter by 7-31. ONLY 50 hunters get drawn . Not for sure exact amount of applicants this year but in the past it's been in the thousands.
I couldn't believe I got the e-mail yesterday to hunt the december5th hunt. Lot of hoops and regs but worth the effort. One buck one doe tag. Must be 15 in outside spread for bucks.

A quota deer hunt with antler restrictions? Sounds more like a limited draw trophy hunt.

No it's been that way since I can remember. FOR years military personnel were only ones that hunted there. During covid and desert storm they PAID professional hunters to thin the herd. Because no one was allowed access. They store mustard gas and other nasty stuff there. Supposed to dispose of it is the reason for the facility.

So, venison with a little mustard gas. Sounds tasty!

Someone in Illinois did win the lottery last night. Over a billion dollars. They might get half.

15 inch outside spread? How do you judge that?
50" moose is tough enough, but at least you have the other option of tree brow tine minimum.

Just make sure it wider than its ears does the trick.

Outside the ears is a ballpark. Not sure a warden would give you 14 5/8. I've heard plenty of guys that have shot "18 inch deer", and when you get a tape measure out, its 13, maybe 14 inches.

You pass any buck until you know for sure. It's not that difficult for an experienced mature whitetail buck hunter.

Hunts on areas like jbyrd got picked for isn't a hunt where you go with the mindset to shoot the first deer/buck that walks by. Inexperienced hunters (that haven't looked at a lot of buck deer in their hunting life) probably should not apply. Could put themselves in a bind....legally & financially.

I apply annually to hunt a state area in SW Georgia that has antler restrictions (get selected about every 3rd year.) On this area any buck must have a 15" outside spread or 4 pts over an inch long on one side. I've killed 2 good 8pts in three hunts there. Looked at several smaller bucks. It is a special place....a former quail plantation that the state bought and continue managing for quail with fire management and food plot system.

I enjoy these kinds of public land hunts. Limited people...only 35 hunters selected on 2500 acres and usually only 20+/- show up. Three day hunt.

This is a 1 day hunt and ends at 2 pm. Been there with my son on a youth hunt 24 years ago. Saw one of the biggest deer in my life body wise but wasn't legal . It had 6 massive points on one side. But the other side came straight down it's jaw line. I wouldn't let him shoot it becuase there was no spread. Ask the game warden when he checked in his doe if it was legal. He said no and I dodged a pretty hefty fine by not allowing him to shoot it.

This is a bonus deer for me. It better be big or I'm not killing it. Once in a lifetime chance and if I kill a monster great. If not I already have a box full of horns. If given the chance up in the day I might take a doe. Elderly lady I know wants all the meat she can get.
Best part is it's only 54 miles from my house.

Good luck on that future hunt. These type quota hunts are my favorite public land hunts. I don't hunt PL often but do search out these antler restricted areas annually......if I can get picked.

Jbyrd, is this in Kentucky? Also how many bucks can you shoot in KY each year?

I’m asking because if you can only shoot one buck per year, it would suck to miss out on November season all for a 6 hour hunt.

Not all mature bucks are made to have a wide spread. Glad I didn't give this one a pass.
