Oak Wilt - This time of year you will see leaves wilting from the top of the tree down. It will spread quickly thru the root system to surrounding red oaks. Last year we cut all Red oaks on 85 acres to salvage the value in the timber before the trees would die. Talk to a State Forester in your area. THey should be able to give you more information. Once in starts in a woods there is no good way to stop it. Do a search on the Oak Wilt in the Menominee Tribal Forests in Minnesota.


Most recommedations are not to cut or trim live oak trees form April 1 - October1. During this time spore can move from infected trees to trees wisth open wounds.

For some reason several years ago, the instructions around Wi changed from October to July 15th. I'm not sure why. I grew up being taught that October is the start of when we can cut/prune. I think July is too early. Part of the problem with oak wilt is that storms can cause it if tree damage is caused by wind/lightning. Also, there's some ignorant folks who seemingly can't even wait til 7/15.
