My kids (2 & 4) are working on becoming professional grasshopper trappers, they've been using their hands and small nets but I was hoping to find a sweep net like pictured below only smaller. Anyone know of anything or what fabric to order to make one? These are small hoppers and they feed them to the chickens

I would think shade cloth from amazon or wherever would work.

I use a long-handled landing net with a fine mesh. I hold it alongside my Honda Foreman as I cruise through the higher grass in my driveway ditch. Then I stop quickly, close the net and shake the grasshoppers into a good sized garbage bag. Then from the garbage bag, I shake them into a bread bag. Unfortunately, it's been so dry this year, there aren't many to be had. They make a great fishing bait for bluegills and crappies.

I just go out at nite with a headlite and pick em out of the mesquite trees where they're sleeping.

When I was in college my room mate and I collected half a paper bag full of grasshoppers from under the lights in a parking lot. Plan was to feed them to an Oscar we had in an aquarium in our dorm room. Part way back we realized the juices would make a mess of the aquarium water so we stopped at the dorm next door. In their lobby was a phone booth with a closing door, so we dumped a half bag of grasshoppers into the phone booth and closed the door. Problem solved.

Well the second one might be fake but it is a fun way to spend an afternoon with a 22

Those old knappy blankets work great for catching grasshoppers. The little spikes on their legs and their feet get stuck in them. They still pull off easily. We had a nappy pink blanket we would take fishing as kids. We would lay it the tall grass and step on it to get it flat. Then around 4 or 5 of us would walk towards it, driving the grasshoppers onto it. Then, we would drag it down to the lake and pull off grasshoppers as we needed them. It wasn't uncommon to get well over 100 grasshoppers in 1 drive. I wish I still had a blanket like that.

A wool blanket works just fine for catching grasshoppers
We would fasten it to the front of the truck and drive through the weeds
Those were some fun times

We used to use a minnow seine net.
