Anyone ever figure out how to makea frog trap that works ? Was thinking about how I was always trying to trap bull fronha as a kid for some reason . Gigging , grabbing and shooting was easy always wanted to trap them .

Lookin at it now figure you could probably make something like a pigeon trap with the weird little wire leg doors and put one or two of them lil solar garden lights in it. Set it in a inch or two of water , light attracts bugs , frogs push in to get to the bugs .... Most of the ponds round here seem to be low on frogs due to the snakes so can't really test it out .

Seen videos on YouTube and Facebook of the. Folks in place like Vietnam trapping frogs with these deals that look like little bitty slat traps . Bait them with dead fish ... But apparently they have a different Theo of frog that eats about anything instead of ours where it's gotta be alive and moving.

Any one figured anything out other then shooting gigging or grabbing ?

Never trapped them, the easiest way was to use a fly rod around 9 footer,
Use a small triple hook, put a red or white piece of cloth on it.
Dangle it in front of them, and catch all you could in the area.
Now they have limits, and not sure what's legal now.
A trap would be interesting, just how would you get the frog to commit to it?

Researchers set up basic funnel traps with long wings to catch frogs and other amphibians. They work really well.

It's similar to catching fish, armadillos, or groundhogs.

Make a funnel trap out of chicken wire. The outside of which will just fit in a black garbage bag. The funnel hole itself should be just big enough to let frogs and small fish in and not muskrats or turtles. Works year round. The black bag gives it a log appearance, winter or summer. Have no idea if its legal in your state.

In winter a frog can absorb oxygen thru skin, don't know what limit would be in warmer weather before they would drown, I never did experience that.

When I was a kid old car tires was flimsy and if left stacked up the beads would go together. Sometimes I would just drill holes and tie beads together. Then cut about a 5'' hole in the tread and tie a rope near there. Throw it in the creek and go down there in the hot part of day and pull it out fast , the rope had to be by the hole so the catfish and frogs didn't wash out before you got it pulled out. Had to be fast with the dip net when a frog washed out. It was a hit and miss operation and time consuming, but as a kid I had plenty of that ! Not so much anymore and time is getting shorter everyday now, lol.

Id start with something less challenging like mice or crickets. Ive heard frogs can be spooky, smart , and evasive not to mention there size and them being hard on equipment. Dont jump in the deep end before you know how to swim grasshopper.

Where I live now, (southern central Oregon), we have a lot of bull frogs. A couple weeks ago I was on an ADC job removing muskrats from an agriculture property that has a large canal for irrigation. The canal is lined with cat tails on one side, and the rats were cutting tails there and de-stabilizing the canal. I set 110s in most of the trails through the cat tails and ended up catching several bullfrogs. Not a high-percentage set for frogs specifically, but I guess it happens.

Just doing what I want now.

In Mo, either a hunting or fishing permit works.

LOL Why stumble around in the middle of the night, when you can just use a fishing pole all day long, and see so much better.
Laws in every state seem to be different.
Check them out so it's still a fun gig , and not costly.

A tree cabin for deer hunting really makes sense as you get older.

There's a great many more frogs out at night, than during the day. In super heavily populated areas, you can do okay during the day. In areas with lower populations, night is the time to hunt frogs.

Just remember to make sure to tie the pillowcase. A friend of mine didn't. Out of 30 frogs, only one stayed inside. He had just come back from camping. Finding 29 frogs, guts hanging out, in a packed van, at 4:00am, in the dark, is not a good time. That van stunk until he junked it.

Don't sound like there is much demand for frog traps. Wonder if there would be any demand for little wheel chairs for all those legless frogs. What has ever happened to the corporate conscience in this country, lol ?

Show me a country kid that didn't catch them by hand.
LOL We made bows and arrows, out of hickory for bows, and arrows out of dry weed stalks ( can't remember the weed name) 1/2 inch roofing nails flattened on an anvil for arrow heads. Chicken feathers for flues.
What a great childhood we had.

Everyone didn't grow up wading up a creek with a light and gig stabbing frogs on the bank? I remember riding on dads shoulders b/c the water was too high for my short stuff. Now that I mention it I was young enough to think it was amazing dad knew how to get the bridge where we got out at way late after dark. Like how you know where you going old man? lol He died in 04.

PM me the Grey update Yote if ya wanna. He's a local fella. Mousie and Angela was the other one. Angela was the coordinator on the ND HVAC line at that Chrysler plant I was telling you about. We made every HVAC that went in that Dodge Dakota from 05 on. Small world.

As kids we took a 5gal bucket and sunk it along the shoreline then filled with 6 or 8 inches of water then took a couple of gunny sacks and made wings with them, it works okish especially where there’s a lot of frogs

We would check and remove any caught frogs every morning, there were usually several in each trap, back then we got .35 cents a pound for them and the guy would come once a week to pick them up, I believe they finally ended up on some high school biology lab table being dissected, but back then 70/80s the money was welcome it was way more then the 80 bucks a month my friend who ran a paper route seven days a week made, add in gopher trapping money and life was good then

[quote=KeithC]There's a great many more frogs out at night, than during the day.

Actually I think there's the same amount weather day or night.
Just easier to see the eyes at night.
Harder to see frogs in the green plants during the day.
Last time I took two boys with each of us with 9 foot spinning rods, caught 48 in about an hour.

Bull frogs don't get as big in the north as they do in the south either.
Sell fun to fry up a bunch of legs.
