I've been looking at a two different trucks. One has 20" wheels the other has 22" wheels. I know 22" wheels are more street wheels and for "fashion". I'd rather have the 20" or even some 18" wheels. I like the truck with 22" wheels better, except for the fact it has 22" wheels. I know I could swap the wheels but that's an added expense to consider. My question is: does it really matter? I don't "rock crawl" or abuse vehicles. I will hunt, fish, trap, do some farm work, and commute to work with this truck though. I've never owned a truck before and always had a car or an SUV. Am I overthinking that 22" wheels are an issue?

You'll have less choices in tires, and as a general rule the larger the wheel, the more expensive the tire. Which makes no sense, considering the fact that the larger the wheel the less material in the tire, for the same diameter of tire. This may help pay for switching to smaller wheels, but nothing says you can't wear the existing tires out before buying new wheels and tires. One other thing is that for the same rating of tire, the less sidewall (distance between rim of wheel and tread) the harsher the ride. Generally it is brake size that determines minimum wheel diameter on a vehicle. I prefer 16" wheels because I like ten ply tires and 16"s still provide the largest selection and best prices on 10 ply tires. But some newer trucks have oversized brakes and require 17 or even 18" rims.

Another factor, that is likely not a concern for you, if you ever try to mount or dismount your own tires, with tire irons or even a manual tire machine, the more sidewall, the easier it is to do so. I once mounted some low profile car tires on some fifteen inch rims to put on a snowmobile trailer (low profile to fit under the deck and the trailer to sit level behind the towing vehicle) those things were harder to mount by hand than the ten plys for my trucks.

Trucks with 22s are for the street

Shorter.the side walls, closer the rims.are to the rocks. I like the 16's , 10 ply also. Old fashion I guess. Think the short sides are for going around corners fast.on pavement.

Like bearcat said, the bigger the wheel, the less choices you will have and the more expensive the tires will be.

I'm with bfflobo on this one, I like 16" load rang E (10-ply) tires on my trucks.

That said, both my tundras came with 18" P-rated tires. It's the one thing I didn't like about them.

The preferred 16 " wheels are not common on newer full size trucks with larger brakes .

Had a good friend who was an engineer for Bridgestone/Firestone. When I asked him a question about tire diameters, he said “we love selling that big hole in the middle”.

Right, minimum size to fit over the discs and calipers on my tundra is 18".
