Have we been amputating arms and I missed it? LOL.

I too think they should be able to own firearms if they have "done their time".

The people you need to fear will own a firearm even when its illegal.

The bumper sticker that was on my dad's shoplight. In the basement said when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

So, Joe gang banger more than likely gets a gun as soon as he's out whether this law is changed or not.

… my uncle got a felony for stealing a truck full of coors in the 70’s

…. He had more guns in the late 90’s and early 2000’s than I do now

… never had a problem whatsoever … carried a 30 in the back window gunrack of an 85 heavy half for the world to see

… might be due to the fact that it was small town Texas I guess

There has always been a process to go though that would allow felons to get all their citizenship rights restored, including the right to own guns. Maybe he's trying to make the process less of a hassle???

Absolutely agree.
The second amendment doesn’t say “ the right to bear arms UNLESS “
It clearly states “ shall NOT be infringed “

Stand by your principles, Stand by your guns, and victory complete and permanent is sure at last.

… I see your point

… but I believe it should have said “ shall not be infringed UNLESS you wear your pants below your butt on purpose”

… but on a serious note … the founding fathers viewed dark skinned peoples as less than human

… so anything they wrote should be dismissed as the rantings of white supremacists

One thing that is never mentioned is the inequity within our federal system in regards to felons and guns/voting. So much so that the federal system defines their no guns policy as convicted of a crime that carries a sentence of more than one year. Not felony, not served a year but merely the potential of a year. Depending on state that may or may not be a felony.

Then there is the state rules on voting/guns and pardons. Here in Georgia voting is automatically restored once all sentencing requirements are met and full restoration can be applied for and granted. I know a fellow that was an attorney, he and his brother and mother all went down for conspiracy to commit murder of two law enforcement officers, game wardens. The brother was the really bad one but the lawyer and mother were in up to their necks trying cover it up and back the brother. The lawyer somehow managed to skate out on just a charge of theft of property and the mother for hindering prosecution and reciept of stolen property. He now has his full rights back as does the mother. Heck, he even tried to run for magistrate judge before the state stepped in and disqualified him.

Next door in Alabama a felony can not ever be purged by law. The only available full restoration by law is an executive pardon by the Governor. In past practice that really meant the felon made an appropriate "campaign contribution" through the right lawyer to the right "campaign fund" then wait for the Governor to leave office and hope the last minute pardon comes through. In recent years there have been laws passed loosening this somewhat allowing the state parole board through the Governor's delegated authority to issue pardons and restore some limited rights such as voting. Guns, don't ask. And the felony remains on the record.

And don't even get me started on the Domestic Violence misdemeanor restriction. That's a federal thing as well. Someone please define just exactly what Domestic Violence is. Your missus didn't like getting yelled at for not having supper ready on time, yup you just lost your guns and you didn't even have to hit her. But wait a minute, you can fight it right? The fine is only 500 but the lawyer is 5k, what you going to do? Remember you only get the justice that you can afford. Seems like the powers that be knew exactly what they were doing when they set out to keep certain people in line.

You know kind of like how Alabama's felon laws were codified and set in stone during the era of Jim Crow and prison labor leasing.

I'm as law and order as it comes but I also know just what many of these laws were really intended to do.

A friend who does taxidermy did a mount for a foreigner, when he shipped the mount one form was missing. Was charged with a felony and a Lacey Act, good attorney and a big bill got it to a misdemeanor. But he would have lost his guns, hunting everything over a piece of paper. I'm ok with nonviolent felony's.

they have them anyway

I may feel slightly different about it

Yes if you have done your time and are deemed safe to be in public then yes a right to a firearm should return, they trust them to vote and drive and such.

I however think the standard for getting out of prison should be high enough that you can be trusted with a gun. so manslaughter getting a 15 year sentence the serve 3 and are out I am not a fan of.

so I guess , you are safe enough to own a gun to get out is where I would set the standard.

If they are not safe enough to own a gun , then they should at least remain on probation until they are.

I am tired of the government turning out prisoners they know are not safe to return to the public using the streets as a jail house.
