Nicodemus, Kansas, founded in 1877, is the oldest and only remaining Black settlement west of the Mississippi River established by formerly enslaved people during the Reconstruction era. Part of the broader Exoduster movement, settlers walked miles from the nearest railroad to build a new life on the Kansas plains.Founding and JourneyCreation: Six Black ministers and businessmen and a white developer formed the Nicodemus Town Company on April 18, 1877.The Promising Land: Promoters advertised the northwest Kansas prairie as a fertile refuge from the oppressive post-Civil War South.

I bet it's warm inside those huts. Sad photo, though.

Always the "Debbie downer"

The history of the town had both white and black settlers read the story before nitpicking like usual...

LOL Scott. I saw that there was ONE white person mentioned in the story.

It's a cool pic. The story just doesn't match it, is all.

The photo matches the very early history of the town that describes occupants initially living in dugouts. The town began in 1877 and photos from 1880 show typical town buildings so the dugout period may have been short. The websites with the town history don't show any photos of dugouts that I could find which strikes me as strange if this photo is indeed Nicodemus.

Shelter in the winter and they turn into swimming pools with the spring thaw.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I just want to know the real story behind the photo because the story and photo do not match.

That's what I keep coming up with... photo and known history don't seem to match up.
