Don't know, but i rode around our 150 acres yesterday and saw probably a dozen different shrooms.

except it doesn't seem to be blackening. There are other non-blackening species of Meripilus with the same shape and growth habit but they're all pretty massive in comparison. Young Bondarzewia fungi can also be very similar, but they're also BIG.

Plus some slower-growing polypores can be similar, such as brownish forms of the Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor) but they're tough and leathery.

Late August is normal season for Grifola (sheepshead/hen of the woods).

I was originally thinking cauliflower mushrooms, but yup you are correct ,, hen of the woods, the black staining polypore, cauliflower are all related just have slightly different variations.
I normally don’t see the ( grifola) hen of the woods until October in my neighborhood,, and that’s after we get some adequate rainfall…
Haven’t been able to find any the past few years because it’s been to blasted dry.
None of my trees have produced anything. I have at least 30 regular trees that have always popped them out .
