i went to a class on getting the most out of your tree, seem spraying round up around your trees on the grass and other plants works great, i try a little last year and it really helps!!!, put don't do it if there any wind, even if they are in tubes like all mine are, with in two week all turn brown and die , talk with tree collage guy and he said leave them a loan they might come back, well most of they have green leaf's now just had visit from government people to check on tree grow, and percent success , over 90 percent success, on 300 trees, but I cant get one to grow from a nut, ?? any help out there with this, ?

Which ones can't you grow from a nut? If I spray roundup around little trees I have a piece of cardboard or something to hold by it to protect from drift.

I prefer using a natural mulch like wood chips over round up. The chips hold moisture in the soil and keep the weeds from the base of the tree. Actually, on small trees I WANT weeds or grass long around them to hold moisture in the soil. Once the trees are established with a deeper root system, then I will mow around them.

Big mistake! The grass/weeds/ etc will suck a lot of moisture out of the soil that would otherwise go to the trees. Mo Cons Dept held a landowners class and the treeologist showed slides from a study, showing spraying 5-10 ft around the base with roundup will DRAMATICALLY improve a trees growth rate. Using mulch will boost it even more.
