How do you determine what ring to use when stretching beaver on boards. board is 48x32 and the rings were from a templet purchased at a trappers convention.

Good question! I was thinking about putting a similar post on here. I put up beaver for the first time last year. And was wondering if I could have stretched them to another size larger??? Once I had them on the boards, they were pretty loose to begin with, but got "tighter than a drum" overnight.

You'll know when you overstrech it. when it dries it will pull the nails. If you overstrech it it will thin the back.

let it on. i'm just trying to find out if there is a specific formula that you use for the different ring sizes on the board.maybe it just trial and error and you learn from experience.the more you do the better you get?

that is very true my first ones were really tight but after doing thirty and starting to get a blister i found a happy medium yeah if i was just doing my own you could play them like a drumm also when they get tight and you start seeing were there are a lot of white lines in the leather and your only 3/4 done the last 1/4 will be not to the lines on the patern

no when your nailing when it and making really tight the leather will actully start to break down and stretch showing stretsch marks the white lines as far as knowing wich patern to use before you start lay the fleshed pelt on the board folded with the crease going from the head to the tail depinding on the pull both the head about a inch and the tailand the line that is the closest use after. thats just a strarting point. bigger go longer smaller shorter you will have to play with it after doing a few you will catch on

that's the question. you hit the nail on the head.i can guess but there has to be a better approach before starting to nail or staple that gets you close to the proper ring size.

Marty B.I did the google thing. that's a no go. Dale B. video says to stretch tight and come back 2 rings. just thought there was a more specific approach to use. i have 2 beaver that i don't think will stretch on the 48x32 board. they will look like a football.may have to go to a wider board.

The best way is to develop your own chart. If I can find my chart, I'll post it tommorow. After you have fleshed your beaver, hang it from a nail. Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail. As an example, if I remember right, 42 inches will get you into the XXL size. 37 - 41 puts you into XL, and so on. I always try to get the beaver into the larger size when the measurement is borderline. If I know the pelt isn't going to make the larger size, I don't stretch it as tight. I will cheat just a little on the sides, as in the 4 and 5 o'clock positions on the pelt, to get it into the next size. Don't cheat so much as to get it into a diamond shape though. I've proven to myself you can't over-stretch beaver. Even when the sides are drum tight, the interior, where the valuable fur is, still isn't very tight. That extra size can make a difference of 5 - 10 dollars on some pelts. The last May sale at NAFA I never got less than $40 for any XXL, and many of those I had to really stretch to get them into that size. I never got more than $38 for any XL. If over-stretching had been a problem, I would have had some XXL slide back into the $30 - $38 range. It's been real consistent that way over the years.

Here's the formula I use, and it's right on the money.

- Skin and flesh the beaver.
- Hold it by the nose, and "pop" it like popping or cracking a whip. Do this 6 or 4 times. This limbers up the pelt.
- Hang the pelt by its nose from a nail in the post or something.
- Make sure the pelt is hanging square, and measure it from the nose to the base.

OK, I have to assume now that you have patterns of various sizes already drawn out of your boards. You need to mark the lines in about 4 places with its size.

- Your beaver is measured. Add half of that measue to the full length of the beaver. That measure is a sub-total.
- Multiply the sub-total by 0.10 (i.e. 10%).
- The sub-total + 0.10 equals the number of inches the beaver will stretch.

EXAMPLE:

- After you have skinned, fleshed, and "popped" the pelt, say it measures 36"
- Half of 36" is 18". 36" Original length.
- Add. 18" = 1/2 of above.
Sub-total is 54" = sub-total
x.010 = 5.4"
- Add 54.0"
- Number of inches the pelt will stretch = 59.4" = 60".

- The pelt should stretch 60". If it gets overtight, drop back to
55".

-My first tack goes in at the base of the nose. My second at 6:00
O'clock. My third and fourth at 9:00 and 3:00 O'clock. I work evenly around from those points, keeping the pelt on the proper line.

I measure my tacked-up pelt from one upper leg hold to the diagonally lower leg hold.
Then I measure from the second upper leg hold, diagonally to the second lower leg hold.
Measure from edge to edge. Add these two measurments, and that is the size of the beaver.

Got It? You do NOT measure from hole to hole. You strike a diagonal line from the two holes (above), and measure from the edge of the pelt to the edge of the pelt. Then establish a second diagonal just as you did the first, and add the two lines together.

I said that this would be right on the money, and it will be, EXCEPT and UNLESS you land between two sizes. Then you'll have to wiggle a little bit. You'll get the hang of it.

Questions?
Later,
45/70,
