increasing US mill capacity/jobs is one of the goals.

the goal of these tariffs have always been to have more American goods produced here (American jobs).

Yes, increasing capacity is a goal, but…. How does making the said lumber in the present more expensive, level the playing field? Does making the framing of a house costlier in the present actually do any leveling of any playing field? Does it make the goal of increasing mill capacity occur? I feel like if it did one would find that mill production is increasing but you can easily find that there has been a decrease in production over the last two quarters of 2026.

Think it would cause the white wood (fir) to be more expensive than #2 pine, a southern U.S. product.

Both are currently in play, being used to frame U.S. homes, but the white wood seems to always be cheaper here.

But yet, YTD, Weyerhaeuser is only up 2.65%. Doesn't exactly sound like the softwood tariffs have caused much of a boom in the southern pine market.

Guess we'll just have to ban Canadian softwood then, Lol.

Fir was still cheaper locally at Lowes yesterday, so might need more field levelling.

Rising interest rates(prospects of even higher,,,,) would have more to do with production decreases at lumber mills

Weakening home starts,,,,

Than anything tarrif related

Just guessing,,,, without looking into it

Bought a 4x8 sheet of pressure treated plywood yesterday at Lowe's in north Florida.

Store stack had a mill/manufacturer name on it that is in Madison, Ga (north Ga.)

One sheet $57 Glad I don't need much of that....only one sheet for the floor in two 4'x4' deer tower blinds.

And plywood was included on this last round of tariffs at 50%. Wonder what a similar sheet of plywood will cost in 6 months?

A sheet of 5/8 pressure treated runs about $75 here locally, about $55US. Building a platform on Tuesday. Wood ain’t cheap.

there is a concept with which most reasonable adults are familiar...that of "short term pain, for long term gain".

sounds like they're listening to the same voices I alluded to...those who refuse to accept a short term pain to achieve a long term gain.

no shortage of those folks.

Current administration has added 11.5 trillion to the national debt or over 25% to the total. Long term pain should be their slogan

I'm just not seeing the long term gain, myself. I mean, I am all for short-term pain for long-term gain. Start by raising the interest rate... now. Then drastically slash federal spending...... all social programs.... including subsidies for farms and businesses. Reform the income tax system.

No matter how much Trump and some of you want it, tariffs will never bring back U.S. manufacturing in a meaningful way. It makes much more sense for the U.S. to continue to manufacture the things that they are good at making..... semiconductors, software, automobiles, etc.. while continuing to import stuff it would just be silly to manufacture here..... like hockey sticks.... from those countries that are good at producing those things.

what do you think are the REALISTIC chances that your Rx ("Start by raising the interest rate... now. Then drastically slash federal spending...... all social programs.... including subsidies for farms and businesses. Reform the income tax system.") will be implemented? by EITHER side? EVER!

no, our only real chance is to grow the economy OVER THE LONG HAUL.

if you have a REALISTIC better answer, let's see it! You, too, Donnersurvivor and Dirt.

Well I think raising the interest rate is inevitable, but yeah the rest is unlikely.

What I want to know is why you feel tariffs will GROW the economy when history has already proven otherwise? The last time tariffs of this magnitude were implemented, US exports FELL by 61% and unemployment doubled.
