I picked up a couple never used 330's that are square jawed and the only marking is on the dog it says "Japan". Im just curious who made them and when. Thanks folks.

Looks like a victor to me, but it shouldn?t say Japan on it if it is.

Some of the Herters traps were made in Japan, and they were notorious for copying products.

Thats a Herters , use to have a few of them. the dog should read Herters on one side and H71 and japan on the othe side. They didnt make too many of them.

Northwoods were Taiwan.

Whatever it is, it sure looks collectable, especially in new condition.

I will double check the dog tomorrow, but I looked several times and all I could find is "Japan ". I like to find as much information about traps as I can. The history of them are what interests me more than the value.

Yeah, use a brass brush and clean the dog well on both sides, look for an H followed by a 2 digit number (example H71) Herters used that as a date code- some early traps were only marked Japan. Besides the herters 330s i had ive only seen one other Herters 330 size trap and it had an H71 date code same as mine. If yours only has Japan it is most likely earlier than 1971. I believe they had issues with animal trap company as the Herters 330 was too similar to the Victor 330 and were forced to stop production. Does your dog only have one notch ? your trigger should kinda swing down out of the part that wraps around the jaws kinda like a hinge - correct ? and the dog should hook on to the trigger from the underside instead of over the top like a standard victor conibear correct ?

Yes, the dog has one one notch. The trigger is a "2 part" design.

If you intend to use them, I hope you have better luck with them than I did. A neighbor gave me 6 of those hinged trigger Herter's back in the 80's. Set them, lower into the water, and as soon as the trigger got wet they would snap. Reset, try again, same thing every time. Sold them as soon as I could.
