Does it seem weird to anyone else that state game agencies keep reporting hunter numbers being down? Everything is starting to go to leasing here, getting out of state tags is increasingly difficult, additional restrictions on non residents.

Maybe there's less hunters but the hunters are more effective? Walk onto public land here and it doesn't seem like numbers are down.

We only public ground squirrel, youths and bow/?bow deer and turkey. And turkey has me questioning my sanity . No way I will hunt public durring the weekends for deer or first week of gun. Its all.covered up.

Lots of leased and big money buying up the private land.. we have a lot of public if you dont mind driving .

I dont see less hunter. Infact a small 700 acre place thats mostly a large lake and small pieces of woods around it had 8 hunters on the sign in sheet opening day of squirrel. And that not counting any that came after I was there.

When they say hunter numbers are down it reminds me of Joe Biden getting 80 million legit votes.

My eyes tell me another story.

More hunters than there?s ever been!

Had a trail camera out on public last year that got pictures of deer archery hunters 26 out of 42 days when NR season opened.

Hunter numbers in the Nat Forrest here in south western Va are WAY down from a few decades ago, but so are the deer numbers. It used to be everywhere you looked you saw orange, but now I might see another hunter once or twice a day, or not at all during mid-week. The state is not able to manage the habitat on the federal lands due in part to Wilderness area designations. Meanwhile, deer numbers on private land are increasing.

Lots fewer hunters coming north any more. The wolves have seriously hurt the deer population. Many hunters stay in the southern and central parts of the State where they will see 10 times as many deer and probably have milder weather as well. If I didn't live here I wouldn't come here to hunt.

Cwd, EHD, wolf's. Reducing populatio, reduced access, increased cost i could see also playing into it.

For so many hunting is all about the rack, nit the hunt, being out with friends and traditions. Really would take the fun out of it for me to focuse on antlers or.messuer success by if I killed something. Today I should probably be carrying a camera not a gun or bow.

The effects of animal rights has taken a huge toll on American life styles .
Plays right into the hands of communist politicians wanting to ban guns.

Rack hunters have ruined hunting, with their leasing hundreds of acres, and blocking access to prime hunting areas.
Anti hunters not allowing hunting, and less and less pressure on the herd.
The deer doesn't get pushed like they were before.
Kids don't see the numbers when the deer aren't pushed.
Only farmers with damage permits are keeping the herd controlled in certain areas.
I laughed when bow hunters leased a bunch of acres, blocked it off.
An Amish farmer bought the farm next door, and got deer damage permits.
Killed the big bucks , lol.

I question any of the numbers regarding hunter participation. I dont think most in the state DNR could pee a round hole in the snow. On the surface it definitely seems like we have fewer hunters in many instances and there is no doubt that the older generation is fading out on us. But I wonder how much the decline really is vs what our perception believes. My dads generation talked of Michigan hunting as chasing pheasants and ducks back in their day at least in the lower part of the state. Such a deal that kids didnt go to school on the openers. Deer hunting was a thing in the northern part of the state but not in the south at that time. Lots of folks traveled north to hunt then as there just werent the deer in southern Michigan. But things change over time--- As pheasants began to vanish, gun hunting for deer became a thing at least in area I grew up because the whitetail population by then was on a steep increase I only got to see the very end of the good pheasant days and I was awful little at the time but by time I was a teen at the end of 70s and into the 80's there was an army of orange out on deer opener that didnt exist in my dads era. I can drive 150 miles around southern Michigan now on first few days of deer gun season and I'd be lucky to count 25-30 parked vehicles. So sometimes that has me thinking there arent any hunters BUT I dont really believe that either. There are still plenty of deer hunters. To me the difference is most of them now bow hunt in some form or fashion which was NOT the case back 40-50 years ago and a good chunk have spent some time out before gun season even opens and unless you are a down state troll and going north for the solitude or experience you are likely better off pursuing deer in the south close to home. And turkey werent a thing in southern Michigan until recent times. Seems to be plenty of turkey hunters to go along with an oversupply of birds. I think many of the hunters now are splitting their time between lots of priorities and as such become dedicated hunters for a very brief part of any season but fewer spend long stretches hunting and most of the focus is on whitetails or turkey with a few small game or waterfowl hunters in the mix compared to generations ago when that was common practice. You cant hardly get out of your truck to set a trap unless its well past the first of the year without interupting someones deer shooting.

I can agree with you on most of what you've posted.
But all you've pointed out has effected younger hunters and trappers enthusiasm.
Rack hunters/bow hunters leasing land , blocking hunting access, have had a negative effect on hunting period.

National trend that we are losing both hunters and anglers. License sales are down all across the country and very little recruitment coming from younger generation. No different than what we are seeing with trappers.

I?ve seen several of the surveys that have been done both locally and nationally as they ask people about their partisanship in hunting and fishing. The #1 reason for quitting is access, if people don?t have a place to go and have a positive experience they soon find other hobbies. Yes the hardcore outdoorsmen will work tirelessly to find spots to go but that is not the norm anymore.

Commercial hunting/ leased land have made the sport more and more about ? pay to play? and when the normal person realizes it?s nothing like how it?s portrayed on the Outdoor Channel they get frustrated. The big buck mentality has also hurt, I know kids in high school that get teased for shooting a 130? buck because they have a 160? minimum on their farm. I?ve known kids to quit just for that reason, and not realizing that the 130? deer was a trophy for the quality of land they had permission to hunt.

I could do a 3 page post on this issue as I see lots of problems with the culture now.

Other big thing is habitat loss, as quality habitat disappears it forces everyone into the same spots, leading to nothing but dissatisfaction.

I believe as Ive mentioned before, the best investment a young person can make is a chunk of land. They arent making any more of it and it hasnt went down in price in many years...at least in my area. Even if a fella could afford a lease today, sure doesnt mean you could 20 years from now...or that your kids or grandkids will be able to.

No doubt ---as Savell would say---deer farming and leasing in the pursuit of some magic trophy buck has had a huge negative impact on access and enthusiasm

I'm 36 and have bought 280 acres, I proved someone "young" can do it but I don't think it's realistic for most young people to own land. If the future of hunting is going to rely on land ownership just put a fork in it now
