Virginia is like Illinois all the population of nut cases live in a few counties and these are the people that elect these idiots

Northern Virginia has always been loaded with political appointees. As the size of the government grows, so does the number of appointees living in northern Virginia. It has gotten to the point now that there are so many of them that they have negated regular people's votes.
To compound matters, when Democrats come to power, the first thing they do is pink slip all of the republican appointees from the prior Republican administrations and replace them with Democrats.
Incoming Republicans coming into power don't do that, so there are always too many democrats still living there negating my votes.

My understanding is that Northern Virginia, the DC suburbs, is the tail wagging that dog. Specifically, that portion of the original District of Columbia that was ceded back to Virginia. IMO, that portion should be stripped from the state and restored to the district in accordance with the original Constitution to include stripping DC residents, it was never intended to be a state or have the rights of a state, of the vote.
