Neighbors dairy cow is 12 days from being due and went down with a bad foot. Gonna try a "shoot n scoop", anyone ever done this or heard of it being done successfully? Plan on tying back legs, shooting the cow and doing a c section as fast as I can. Not real excited about it but I feel like it's the right thing to do considering the circumstances

Beef background here but any birthing issue is a cull. Might be a bit different since it's the foot's fault but foot issues would also be consideration for cull. Whatever the case try to save the calf to cut your losses. Good luck with it and let know how it goes. Would love to see photos of the procedure if you have an assistant that can do that.

I'm afraid pics may be manipulated or misconstrued and show farming in a bad light. Going to shoot the cow in the head with a slug to make sure it's not feeling anything but it may thrash around a bit as we cut and ide hate to have someone spread some BS about it.

Done it a few times for both cattle and sheep.
Make sure your knife is sharp and you know where to make your cut. It is harder to do then you would think, i use an outdoor edge knife with the scalpel type blade.

Be ready to milk her if you don't have access to colosturm. Then tube it once or twice.

BEFORE you put her down, maybe even several times if you can and freeze the milk.

Look up how the brain sets in the head each animal is a little different. I was glad I did when asked to put down a horse. I followed the instructions on shot location I found and it went perfectly. I would not have picked that spot befor I looked it up.

Also tie it and dont stand in front of it. You dont want to end up under her id she kick forward and dont want to be chasing a wounded animal around if something goes wrong.

Bet Dr Pol has done it, probably didn't show it either though....hope it goes as planned.

I?ve tried it on dairy cows with no luck. It seems like by the time you make the decision to cull the cow she has already lost the calf.

Have plenty of colostrum and I've shot a good pile of cows. Neighbor is giving me the cow for burger and I told him ide try and save the calf for him.

I have a reputation in the neighborhood for being a bit unhinged, may as well try and maintain that reputation

Actually I did, lol. Assumed some sort of quick field technique. Still would like to see the c-section part though. Understand not the first part, of course. Seen that, done that.

Actually, I'd like to see a successful live c-section. My only similar experience with cattle is prolapse, never a good outcome even if stuffed back in and stitched.

The only good c-section I've ever seen was my own younguns getting drug out. The missus didn't much care for my commentary on what I was seeing. She seemed to think I was calling her a cow.

The vet here will induce the cow with a steroid or something like that that will cause a cow to go into labor. Almost always had to pull the calf. I don?t remember ever losing a calf. It?s been 20 years ago.

Back in my ole industrial hog barn days we would do it to an old lame sow that couldnt move to the farrowing section.

First off wed make sure it was worth it by doing an ultrasound
Once the shot in the noggin was made the 4 guys would pull it out of the crate with the pullers on the snout and a front leg
Then the shooter took the scalpel and would have the piglets out in very short order. Wed put them with a good sow that accepted other piglets and was a healthy good producer. It usually worked pretty slick.

Calf was out and breathing when I left, cows about on ice.

Tied the back feet and brainstemm the cow with a 9mm, had the calf out in about a min. Calf was never really stressed during the proscess, had to rough it up a lil to get it breathing, gave it to an old cow to lick off and went and started cutting up the cow.

Sounds good.....hope it makes it.
