I don't think many folks really understand the gravity of AI. Soon enough, your general practitioner, heck, a neurosurgeon will be a robot trained in a matter of seconds that will outperform any human doctor on the planet. Imagine a brain surgery going from $1 million to the price of a cheeseburger. Is there any question as to why some rich folks might be against it?

Combined with nanotechnology the medical applications would be top notch. Inject the body with nanorobots that "repair" as you go.

AI AI AI. I have no clue how my life will be improved. Where is all the money going to come from? I have been on 4 different data center construction sites. The money being spent is mind boggling.

In 2008 I graduated and needed a real job. Nothing to be had locally so I started climbing wind towers. Staggering amount of money going into wind towers, they were going to change the world blah, blah, blah. All BS, bunch of overfished trout and you constantly have to throw something new at them to get them to bite.

That something new is usually taxpayer funding,

I'm not sure I agree with everything said in here but it is food for thought........

Quote

Opposition to artificial intelligence has intensified over the past year. A majority of Americans worry that AI will kill jobs, distrust the information it generates, and doubt that tech leaders will develop the technology responsibly. Opposition has crystallized in environmental concerns about data centers. More than 70% of Americans oppose their construction, and 10 times as many Americans told Pew Research that data centers are bad for the environment than said they are good for the environment.

The environmental movement has jumped on the bandwagon. The National Wildlife Federation calls the AI boom "an environmental justice crisis." Student activists from the Sunrise Movement stormed the Washington lobbying offices of OpenAI last month, insisting that AI threatened their job prospects and access to clean drinking water.

But what if AI holds the key to a better environment? While concern about data centers focuses on dubious claims about water use, water quality, electricity prices and (somewhat more credibly) short-term carbon emissions, the environmental promise of this moment is being overlooked. AI and the build-out of data centers may offer a generational opportunity to clean up our electricity grid, improve water quality and water-use efficiency, and accelerate technologies to lighten the burden we impose on the planet.

How is this possible when hyperscalers are scrambling to build data centers and often powering them with carbon-emitting natural gas and sometimes even coal? Surging growth in electricity demand historically has accelerated the deployment of clean electricity-generation technology. The golden age of nuclear energy in the U.S. in the 1960s and '70s was a response to the rapid expansion of the grid in the postwar era. Rapid expansion of electricity grids in China, India and other developing countries has supercharged the adoption of solar, wind and batteries globally over the past 15 years. New research suggests this may be happening with the build-out of data centers in the U.S.

Moreover, the economics of AI electricity demand are unique and promising for the commercialization of key clean-energy technologies. Data centers need large amounts of power around the clock, so reliable generation is at a premium. Data-center developers are uniquely able to pay high prices -- data centers need a lot of electricity, and that cost is a comparatively small share of the total capital and operating cost of a large data center. Much of the investment in frontier AI computation, which accounts for 50% or more of the cost of a large data center, depreciates in a few years. Therefore providing power to those high-powered chips so they are running all the time becomes an economic imperative.

Hyperscalers are deploying a lot of natural gas-powered generation because it is the only technology available that can meet the demanding reliability requirements of data centers. But there is a backlog of orders for new combined-cycle natural-gas plants and good reason to think that gas prices will rise in the future. As a result, hyperscalers are making major commitments to next-generation nuclear, nascent geothermal and natural-gas plants that capture the carbon they produce. The massive data center build-out may prove to be the critical platform for commercializing clean, reliable, low-carbon electricity-generation technology that the world will need to tackle climate change.

The revolution in computational capabilities that is driving the AI revolution also promises to accelerate environmental-technology innovation. Whether by modeling the behavior of superhot plasmas in fusion reactors, developing better membranes to clean wastewater cheaply for reuse, or designing high-powered computer chips that use electricity more efficiently, the AI revolution is already seeding a revolution in clean technology.

That transformation will likely go beyond the energy and water footprints of data centers or electricity generation, promising everything from affordable and palatable cultivated meats to lower-impact precision agriculture to hyperefficient jet engines.

Whatever you think about AI, the future of the planet will be determined not by a short-term blip in domestic carbon emissions from data centers or the comparatively modest land and water demands of even the largest data centers, but by how quickly the world develops clean technologies to meet the food, energy and water needs of eight billion people. We shouldn't pass up this opportunity.

boy some of you guys are really drinking up the government koolaid. A I is for one purpose, to spy on the american people. data centers are for one purpose, to store all that data they collect. and later for the complete control of the american people.

He says as he types on a computer or phone that is transmitting every word he writes to one of those said data centers to store it for future use, lol. I'm sure once AI takes over the world they will come after the people that opposed them first, lol.

Yotetrapper what don?t you understand? Build data centers in places where all that data is generated. Not out in the country where city services are unavailable.

I'm with you. I'm not opposed to data centers or technology but acting like they're going to save us from China and decades of poor financial decisions is optimistic & moronic. "They" are starting to use the covid framing for the conversation "if you dont mask up, take the vaccine and stay in side your endangering everyone and part of the problem"

Now it's "if you oppose data centers your the reason for the national debt and china's rise, you're endangering the rest of us"

I'm not buying it. Data centers are so corporations can monetize you better. Your 6 year old getting advertisements for a new gadget near their birthday is what we need data centers. Politicans are just pissin down our backs and telling us it's raining trying to sell this as national defense and economic efficiency

There are 3500 plus data centers now, we use them every day. They already have all the info they need on us, this new wave will be a good thing. I also think picking a career as a young person would be tough.

Heard on the radio today that NY city has 72 data centers, some in Manhattan, not huge ones, but 72...
we are all already identified, and tracked, with the centers they have...we don't need fear being controlled, it's already happened, look at covid, throw a scare into people and the sheep fall in line...

I'll be honest, my knowledge of data centers is pretty low..but as long as they pay to upgrade the utilities, recycle their cooling water , and use noise abatement, that's about as good as it's gonna get, cause there coming,... somewhere...

A lot of people are and will be finding it hard to hold a career as their jobs start being done by AI. Older folks will have a harder time making a change after decads in one area.

I used to think som of my jobs mad me not replaceable. Today I know better. All the equipment I have been running can be donr with automated AI controlled systems. The construction and line clearance fields I did when younger can be filled with immigrants.

You're only looking in one direction, I don't know anyone who wants a date center and all of us are conservative

What happens when quantum computers finally came on line?
What will happen to all of these Data centers? How do we recycle all of the components in those Data centers?

I truly believe we are being scammed by this whole thing.
I think there's a huge economy crushing reality coming for the USA
Hope I'm wrong, but then again sometimes I'm right

Well, I guess that's one way to look at it. I live in a very rural area..... and if someone here were willing to sell a piece of their farm land to build a data center, I would be all for it. It would no doubt result in energy grid upgrades. Then maybe my power would not go out every other day. The taxes generated might even make enough money to fill in some of the foot deep pot holes on my road.

More likely to happen is your property taxes will increase along with yout electric and possible water bill depending on what type of cooling system they use.. the data center will get huge tax breaks and only infustructer improvements will be what would directly benefit the data center.

Will get a small bump in jobs for construction and to the local economy during but once on line the full time jobs are not many and highly specialized. So those higher paid people will bring their money buy up land and drive up property values some more.
Similar to what the tec industry has been doing when they move the jobs out of the unbuisness friendly California but bring the work force with them to business friendly states. They bring their larg bank acounts with them then vote and try to chane where they moved into what they just left.

And you may end up with light, water, and noise pollution. Depending on the system implemented.

I agree keep them in the city.
Kind of like I dont understand why they are not puting solar farms over shoping center parking lots and roofs installed of on good agricultural land.. the electricity would be able to be used very near or right where its produced and parking under shade of solar panels seems positive to me.

I could be missing something but I do have 2 data center going up and a 3rsd being proposed 2 within 8 miles or so of me the other within 35.
