Stuck in Topeka for a couple days so I been hunting for nice filet mignon steaks
. Weve decided that is the best value as there is no fat or bone to pay for. Hyvee has 5 oz steaks for 18.99 EACH. That computes to $60/#. Not happening. Dillons has them for $28.99/#. I been shopping the 6 Dillons in town and scoring some nice steaks.

I got 2 straps to cut up into fillet in my fridge right now

it took connections , a bullet and about 5 hours out of my Saturday
actual shot to start clean up was only an hour.
it's cleaning , getting set up , then doing the deed , then cleaning again that takes all the time.

and I have some burger coming to go with my steaks , a steer with bad legs that has been crawling for 40 days hoping it would get better. the vet had given it antibiotics 40 days ago , supposed to be safe to eat in 35

I split it with some friends a young couple she works for the farm , they had never butchered one before so I showed them how and got the straps and 20pounds of ground , lent them my grinder I would figure probably 140-150 pounds of ground total

A guy in SoDak gave me a blind heifer that had been on pasture. No corn. I couldnt eat it. Gave it all to my DIL.

Grass fed definitely has a different taste then corn fed.

Grass fed beef to me tastes/smells like pasture cow poop smells. As soon as it hits the frying pan Im done

Then the vegetable oil craze came along and animal fat was bad for you?
Pork chops became tasteless and dry.
Farmers were raising the pork to be leaner , because of supply and demand.
I' think that's going to change soon, as beef is also being grass fed to be leaner.
Steak doesn't taste like steak anymore.
Why do you think Japan started raising beef to be fatter?
Now their beef is the highest priced beef on the market.
Fat adds the flavor.
And is proven better for you than vegetable oils.

I much prefer grain fed venison over grass fed beef. Even deer have enough sense to eat corn.......and soybeans when available and not just grass.

this was a grass fed steer , they taste fine to me , they may have more flavor but it isn't bad

Beef needs to be finished off on corn and sweet grain.I get a kick out of advertising as "Grass Fed Beef".Most dont know any better.

Moose eat twigs and caribou eat lichen, and I’d take either of those over grain fed beef. I guess it just depends on what you were raised on/preferences.

not in southern WI anyway the grass forage pasture mix is of great enough quality that we get marbled meat on grass , they are fed no corn , soy or other grains , just hay mix in the winter and what they eat from the pasture after snow is out and things green up.

we pasture them , give them free access to water and minerals but NO grain and get good quality beef with marbling in the steaks.

This. I was raised on venison and elk, the only beef I have eaten in years is a fast food hamburger once in a while(not sure if the meat is really beef) and I don't miss it. I much prefer whitetail over any other red meat. Wild turkey is the same way once we learned how to prepare it we don't eat domestic turkey at home.
