…. Easiest beddin trap out there

… decent jaw spread

… nice sized kill zone

… changed over to them exclusively a few years ago

… but had a few pullouts…. 2 right in front of me as I was gettin the nap time equipment out of the truck .. full pad catches

… four coiled all of them year before last and haven’t had an issue since

… don’t regret my decision… just should have 4 coiled straight out the gate I guess

… thought I’d share

Question of curiosity.
How long is your chain setup, and how are you anchoring?

… I ain’t a long chain hand … about 15 from the first swivel up from earth anchor chain

… just enough to keep the last swivel working if they mound up in soft dirt

… these two bastages pulled out while fighting the end of the leash anyhow.. no runnin start

You are not the only one. When I first got into trapping i was about 16. Did as much research as I could and at the time #2 bridger was touted as being the best bang for the buck for coyotes. Over the years I had afew pull outs. I just honestly thought this was part of trapping. As time went on my traps became laminated, base plated, music wire springs. Still occasionally I would have a coyote power out of one. A couple times this happened right infront of me. Other times I'd find a heck of a circle and maybe a toe. While messing around one day in the shed with different traps it hit me and hit me hard. A square jaw trap DOES NOT lock up like a round jaw trap. Hard fighting coyotes usually get to sliding across the straight part of the jaw. This explained the occasional toe I found usually in a corner. For awhile I ran #1.5 and #2 victors modified and did not have anymore pullouts. Then when the mb 550 trap landed in 07 or 08 i purchased a couple dozen of them. Not once did I ever have a coyote that was foot caught pull out of one out of triple digits. For my needs of live market trapping over the years I changed to the mb 450. Same thing, never had a pullout. It is hard to explain but when a square jaw trap is closed most of the power is at the corners where the levers are. On a round jaw trap all the holding force is centered in the middle. After trapping coyotes for nearly 25 years nobody will ever convince me that square jaws hold as well as round jaws. With all that said though there is 1 man that knows how to make a square jaw trap that will hold coyotes consistently. His trap was just too big and strong for my needs here in Georgia. That is until recently. The new lil jake trap. I have held and set the trap and on a waiting list to get mine. Jim knows what it takes to make a square jaw trap that will hold and it doesn't have to weigh 10 pounds to do it. The lil jake weighs 2.7 pounds. For comparison the mb550 comes in at 2.25 pounds so not much difference. The only square jaw traps I own currently are bodygrips. Every foothold I own is rounded. It was hard for me mentally to consider buying a square jaw foot trap but I know with the wire levers Jims traps lock up and thats the big secret in my opinion. When you are taking a coyote out of a trap unless you struggle some getting the levers down they are not locked up. Sometimes you will have to really work the levers with your hands or step on them with your feet to get them to go down. Thats when you know that trap was locked up.

So now you've doctored your Bridgers enough that they will keep up with the Montanas?

I run a bunch of them. Really like them and the price. Bridget #2 dog less quickly became my go-to in recent years.
I run shorter chains with extra swivels.

The Montana went the right direction for this style.
Guys that ran a lot of the old monties learned these.

I also like the traps. Mine are off set. Cant say I have had pull outs for sure but can say I have had a full toe compleat with entire toe pad still in the trap. The foot gave loose not the trap.

I also am sure I dont catch the amout of critters all season you do in a few days so you get to have more observations and larger sample size. If I start having issues I will keep 4 coiling them in mind as a solution. Its possible I had pull outs and figure they were coons front foot caught and was just wrong.

B2 dogless are all I use. I've had a handful of pullouts.....most noticeably with bobcats......and that really ticked me off. First lunge mostly, but a couple times they were held longer. Figured they were toe caught most times. I can't recall losing a coyote specifically.

Four coiling eliminates this problem as Savell says. This makes them stout and changes pan tension a little. But, that small night latch notch eliminates any need for re-adjustment.

Over three or four years I have 4-coiled and just counted them a few weeks ago....11 traps left to 4-coil out of 126.

I run short chains too.....15 or 16 inches. Swivel at trap. Swivel at stake. Swivels connecting an In-line shock spring on most (that slows the bedding of an easy to bed trap)...leftover from my live market days.

Still...the Bridger 2 dogless is the best trap for my conditions here (99% sandy soils.) I've owned and used many types of coyote-sized traps (Victors, Sleepy Creeks, to MBs) and occasionally every type had 1 or 2 that ended up sitting in the middle of a catch circle with a few short top of the foot hairs left on the jaws.

Wade,
I do tend to agree that round-jawed traps levers lock up a little better by design. That's why you never hear about as many beaver pullouts from MB750s.

I got montanas too, wright brothers.
I like the #2 round jaw modeled after the old style Monty’s better than the squares for some reason.
I also have a bunch old round jaw #2 Monty’s.
Just my preference. The #2 Bridgers have filled a nice space for me in my mixed bag dry land line around here.
